Snow Patrol have come on the scene and can be classed as an overall success story with what they have produced thus far. This is the bands first album and its a great debut. It's not phenomenal, like Oasis' Definitely Maybe, but it is great.
The playlist is as follows:
1. How To Be Dead 2. Wow 3. Gleaming Auction 4. Whatever's Left 5. Spitting Games 6. Chocolate 7. Run 8. Grazed Knees 9. Ways & Means 10. Tiny Little Fractures 11. Somewhere A Clock Is Ticking 12. Same 13. We Can Run Away Now They're All Dead And Gone (UK Bonus Track) 14. Half The Fun (UK Bonus Track)
The first few songs flow very well and serve as a good introduction to what you can expect from the band. The music of Snow Patrol can probably be fairly described as disjointed throughout most of the album. That is not to say it is not good. It is just that it maybe lacks the melodies of other bands such as the Stone Roses and Oasis. The guitars are a bit up and down and just when you think you have the flow of the song the guitar builds up or down again just to throw you of course!
One song that does not follow the typically disjointed sounds of Snow Patrol is 'Run'. Do not be mistaken, this is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is arguably my favourite song of all time. It is an uplifting anthem of the highest order that builds and builds with melody and delightful lyrics to an incredible crescendo at the end that will have you playing it again and again and again.
'Grazed Knees' is a fairly quirky number which I must admit I quite like. It maybe doesn't naturally flow from 'Run' before it but its a good song once you get into it. On the other side of 'Run' is 'Chocolate' which is a cross between Feeder and Doves. If you like those bands then you will like this very well put together song. The lyrics are absolutely brilliant and thought-provoking.
The album is one that I would recommend just for 'Run' itself if I'm being totally honest. That's how I bought it! But the rest of the album, though never reaching the giddy heights of 'Run' is a commendable first album and well worth a listen.

I really rate this album, to my mind it's even better than "Eyes Open". I reckon it would make it into my top ten all time favourite albums. Lexy

Advantages: excellent musically, with some of the best lyrics from an album of 2003. Disadvantages: 12 tracks of reasonable length make it quite a long album.
Advantages: Swirling melodies and itchy guitars, thematic and emotive Disadvantages: No real variation in the songs, they're either grunge-y or mellow-y
