I bought this gem of an album ( pun on words)! after hearing the "wish I" single being used for the Celebrity Love Island reality show, I found it very catchy and actually thought it was Dido on first listening! I soon found out at the time it was a little known singer from Penarth, Wales called Jem. All the songs on the album are remarkably catchy which makes this album very hard to hate. This album consists of 11 tracks all written or co written by Jem herself. Though I have to admit her vocals are rather samey all the way through, yet it works as all the backing tracks have been well suited to her vocal capability. Certainly falls into the same category as artists such as Dido and Sarah Cracknall.
The first track on the album is "They" I absolutely love the drum and bass on this song, it deserves to be played loud, it starts with Jem harmonising something that sounds like"bupbada" numerous times before Jem's chilled and calm vocals kick in and the drum and bass backing track, this song is a great little number with a very catchy
chorus but can get a bit mundane after a while if not in the right listening mood after hearing the words "so sorry" for the umpteenth time.
Come on Closer the second track, is a clever orchestrated backed song with a catchy rock guitar rift kicking in a few bars along, you can almost picture Slash from Guns and Roses guest starring on the track, quite a seductive song bearing in mind the vocals describe what she would like to do to her man… "Shut your eyes and think about what I'm gonna do…" leaves you wanting more. A great seductive song.
Finally Woken is the title track to this album and one of my favourites, starts off with a spooky sounding gem "wooing" like a ghost in the background before and when her vocal kicks in. A very chilled out melody, you can actually picture yourself sitting on a beach looking out to sea when she sings " I have a view of the sun, right over the sea", I am not sure about the meaning of this song but it's almost as if it's about a person arising from a Coma ie " finally woken from a long sleep" or going to the other side and setting yourself free after being stuck between worlds.
Save Me is a catchy little number, Jem's material changes direction here a little bit using a reggae guitar backing track all the way through, her voice works great here and proves she can sing different stuff. Your be singing "save me oh wooh" all day after hearing this song,
24 is another orchestrated song which works very well against Jems voice, and the rock guitar sets in setting this song on fire, her vocals get much more aggressive and upbeat than the songs before this track on the album, its suggests its about her last couple hours alive as if she's been sent to a death sentence, sounds like a sample of the big ben chime used in the background as the hours pass before they lay flowers on her grave. Probably the most depressing song on the album yet remarkably dark and catchy.
After the previous song it slows down again as the sad missing you plays, its seems to be dedicated in loving memory to her friend exactly what the title describes she is missing this person. Probably the sadest song on the album which makes you really feel for her, her vocals reach some particularly high notes in the chorus line for the first time.
Wish I is the song used for the Celebrity Love Island reality show, a lovely up tempo chilled out song, using a catchy little drum and reggae beat with cute steel drums and chiming chucked in, you can almost imagine being deserted on a desert island sipping cocktails listening to this, my favourite single of last year. A song about wishing her man would come back to her.
Just a ride is one of the singles taken from this album, a very harmonious tune using a uptemp accoustic guitar, the chorus is very catchy using the title name. I can't help think she has nicked the style of this one from ST Etienne with the backing track.
Falling for you is a catchy little number, the longest track on the album but a classic song, it has less of the drum and bass Jem has used in the previous material, she has used more of a guitar sound for this one and has become more of a up tempo ballad about wanting someone you cannot have.
Stay now starts off with a lovely violin introduction and then becomes an accoustic classic, a lovely mellow sounding song with lots of pleasant accoustic pleasantries with an orchestra backing track thrown in. A very soothing classic that wouldn't sound out of place on the nightime slot on the Chill radio station.
The last track is Flying High, its basically just an accoustic guitar and Jem singing, which is absolutely beautiful. One of the best tracks on the album.
On the whole this album is great and Jem has some beautiful tracks, but if I hadn't of known who this was, I cannot help but compare her to Dido, she sounds very similar but on the whole I think this album just edges my favouritism over Dido's "life for rent".

Advantages: Very good to listen to, makes you feel relaxed no matter how stressed out you feel, Jem has a hell of a voice and she's a lovely looking lass too. Disadvantages: None that I can think of

Review of Finally Woken - Jem
Advantages: Great mixture of songs, represents ?The O.C? but in a totally different way to mix 1, there?s a really cute picture of Seth on the cover :D Disadvantages: Songs, which possibly weren?t that memorable, made the cut as apposed to songs, which stuck with the viewer, such as Jeff Buckley, Rooney and Aqualung.
