Advantages: Good for birds and butterflies . Disadvantages: Prickly
you do not want people coming in. Holly is also a good wildlife hedge. Birds love the berries in the winter. I have seen many a blackbird with a red holly berry in its beak song and mistle thrushes, redwings and, fieldfares are among the other birds that eat holly berries. Although birds love the berries they are poisonous to humans.
The holly blue butterfly will lay its eggs on the flower buds of the holly and the caterpillar will eat it. The holly flowers are white. Bees love to sup the nectar from the flowers
The Robin, thrush's goldfinches and some other birds will nest in a holly tree as it provides good protection from predators.
Underneath a holly leaf litter collects do not remove it as it is a haven for hedgehog's slow worms and other small mammals to hibernate in.

Holly / aquifoleceae
Christmas is nearly here so it’s nearly time to deck the halls, sitting rooms, and parlours with holly I thought I would write a little op about it.
Holly is a family of more than 300 species. They have red, black, white, cream, or orange berries.
Some hollies are used medicinally.
North American holly Ilex opaca has in the past been given for bronchitis, fever, worms, gout and rheumatism
Ilex aquifolium has been used for malaria; rheumatism and influenza believe the leaves were used
The one we are familiar with is the common/English holly Ilex aquifolium
Holly is associated in Christmas traditions throughout northern Europe. I suspect it symbolises the crown of thorns and the red berries blood.
Holly symbolises the continuation of life through winter dormancy
The holly was not called holly ...

When I was younger I always had my nose in a book. Being the huge animal lover I was, I often chose to read books about animals. The Animal Ark book series by Lucy Daniels was very popular with me, and one of the titles was Hamster in the Holly.
Although you should never judge a book by its cover, I always do, so it is important that it looks good! Thankfully this one does. There is a gorgeous little picture of a hamster, a gorgeous golden colour, wedged in front of a holly bush complete with glossy red berries. It is the one cover that I can never forget, its adorable. It definitely made a good impression on me.
The book itself is about Mandy Hope, whose parents are vets. A hamster has gone missing from its home, and Mandy has taken it upon herself to find the little rodent. But can she find it before it is out in the cold too long ...
