I guess most reviews come from the fact that people either have something really great they want to tell people about, or really bad that they want to moan about. To be honest I would love this to be a big rant about Great Western, but I'm going to keep my comments fair, because although they do a lot of things wrong, there are also some things that I do actually like about the way they run their service. I started getting First Great Western trains from Reading a couple of months ago. I generally get the rush hour trains in and back, but I do also have experience of using their trains during off-peak hours as I used to travel a lot on them at the weekends last year. First Great Eastern or Worst Great Eastern

Disadvantages: Generally packed trains

, I was a somewhat hardened commuter already. I was used to rarely getting a seat, and trains not running to time. For all the problems that Connex were having, being dragged from pillar to post for their poor service in the media, I expected better things from First Great Eastern. Now, two years of cramped trains, faulty signals and poor service, I?m back working in Chelmsford, and am glad to be rid of my daily grind into work. You see I am big and ugly enough to take the occasional mis-hap on the way to work. It?s beyond the realms of probability that a train company will be able to run all of it?s trains on time, in a clean and safe environment. I accept that there will be times when a signal DOES fail, or a train DOES break down. I find it hard to believe, however, that these things can happen time and time again ...

get a free glass of wine between 1500 and 1900 on Fridays. You are also plied with free newspapers. There are first class lounges at Paddington, Bristol Temple Meads and Cardiff Central. The First Class stewards work until 19.00 hours, Monday to Friday. After 19.00 hours and at weekends, First Class customers should present their ticket to the steward at the Buffet, who will serve their refreshments. Complimentary items are not normally served at seat on journeys between Plymouth and Penzance, but can be obtained from the Buffet.
