Those who know Relient K, I'm sure will be familiar with the ingenious way in which they ingrain take-home messages seamlessly into catchy songs. You will be pleased to know that there is no disappointment in this field in Five Score. "Forgiven" and "Must Have Done Something Right" display themselves as having come of the cleverest lyrics yet, so if Matt's crystal clear pronunciation still doesn't cut it, grab your lyrics booklet and give it a read!
One of the most impressive things about the album is its consistency. For me, the core of the album doesn't lie until you reach tracks 12 ["Bite My Tongue"] and 13 ["Up And Up"], as opposed to many where you switch off after track 5. The slick, strict and strained guitar opening "Bite My Tongue", along with the thundering drums and bass that follow are sure to have you wanting to jump up and down as if you were at their live concert [or at least drumming on the dashboard if the car is too restricting in space].
So from the speeding sweet "I'm Taking You With Me" to the angsty edge of "Devastation And Reform", there is variation in Five Score. As much variation as is possible with Relient K, anyway.
"Deathbed" is the ballard ending the album, and there's a good 11 minutes of it! But don't skip the ending; lie back and listen to the story, otherwise it is likely to sound very boring indeed. The swinging rhythm of "Faking My Own Suicide" also becomes tedious, although there are next to no weak tracks on the album.
Overall this is a must-have album! My favourite track is number 7, "Give". It occupied my Myspace page for quite a period of time. And enjoy the quirky "Crayons Can Melt…", all 11seconds of it ;)
