...song, or at least the fixed version. Again, Wish on Broken was one of the better songs. There is a moment of hope in this song though, where part of the Broken song comes crashing in missing only the vocals. This track starts off somewhat better. Insistent drums and bass merge with a haunting synth and that pretty much sets the mood for the whole track. Broken was the first Nine Inch Nails album to have a complimentary versions album, the rather predictably titled “Fixed”. However unlike the other versions album it’s a fairly weak effort, surely NIN’s worst release. Trent Reznor is at his most industrial on this album, crashing, squealing, screaming, clanking etc take precedence over any tune. So after that less than promising introduction, onto the tracks themselves.
* Gave Up *
Opening with a siren and a distorted guitar things although this is all the song does for a long time while the vocals come in. Pretty dull really. Then after over a minute of that the vocals get all broken up and a fairly dancy beat comes in and this keeps going for several minutes, somewhat expectedly the song never really lifts itself out of the dull category, which is a shame as Gave Up was one of the best songs on Broken.
* Wish *
An introduction that sounds almost like the Pet Shop Boys (Apart from the fact that it goes on and on). We then move onto a throbbing bass drum and some whispery vocals but we’re a minute in and I still don’t like the song, or at least the fixed version. Again, Wish on Broken was one of the better songs. There is a moment of hope in this song though, where part of the Broken song comes crashing in missing only the vocals. However it doesn’t last and the song starts heading off into drum and bass territory which again goes on and on and on, although we do get stabs of the Broken version again but to be honest that’s the only thing worth bothering about this song. Did I mention it’s over nine minutes long? I don’t think I can make it to the end!
* Happiness in Slavery *
This track starts off somewhat better. Insistent drums and bass merge with a haunting synth and that pretty much sets the mood for the whole track. The lyric “Happiness in Slavery” bends in and out of the song although at over six minutes I feel the track is over long. However it’s not a particularly bad track and is the first track on the album that has actually been reworked by Trent Reznor.
* Throw This Away *
Reworking “Last” off of Broken it’s a slow brooding track and for a change it’s not overlong although at the end the percussion part of the song does tend to overrule the rest of the track. Not to bad though, again Mr Reznor is involved in the reworking.
* Fist F[]ck *
Another reworking of Wish that right from the word go just does not sound right. A song starting like this one does could easily end up as cheesy techno music. And it’s one hell of an intro at almost one and a half minutes. Then we move onto NIN do tribal drums for a bit and then some looped guitar and then the tribal thing again. That’s pretty much your lot, only seven minutes of it. No Mr Reznor on the reworking though – I see a pattern forming!
* Screaming Slave *
Another reworking of Happiness in Slavery, starting off with some very industrial noises and some biting synths although after the great intro that’s pretty much all the track does for about six minutes and then we get some random studio chat before returning to the previous style, finishing after eight minutes. Trent is involved but is only one sixth of the remixing team. To many cooks methinks.
Well, that was disappointing to say the least, Nine Inch Nails are one of my favourite bands but this album was quite dull – at times matching the Industrial section of MP3.com for quality (Dunno why but of all the genres I like there doesn’t seem to be much worth listening to in the Industrial section). Happiness in Slavery and Throw This Away are pretty good and outstanding compared to the rest of the album but that is the main problem. Two good tracks from six does not make a good album, although as with Broken, you should be able to get it fairly cheaply.
Advantages: It's weird, it's interesting, the first track is blinding Disadvantages: can be painfull, drives you mad
'How much noise can you possibly make and still make it sound like a song' seems to be the idea behind this E.P. This is a set of six remixes of the songs from the Broken E.P. but i would say that it's more about reassembling the tracks rather than remixing them. Once again an industrial band have made the serious mistake of getting j.g.thirlwell (AKA foetus, wiseblood, clint ruin, steroid maximus) in to do some remixes. This man has the power to ... ...has to use about 20 different alias' so you don't know when you are buying one of his albums. Why people keep letting him do this is a mystery. He contributes two fairly pointless remixes of 'wish' to this E.P. both of which don't do anything radically different to the original apart from try to convince you that your cd is stuck as the main guitar riff loops round and round for about a minute and a half. These are not bad tunes but they are nowhere ...

Advantages: It's a Halo, isn't it? Disadvantages: It's boring and uninspired
Not a fan of this one at all folks. It's just plain boring. Uninspired remixes of the songs of Broken don't take the songs any new places. I only brought it based on word of mouth and I'm kinda regretting I did. The Happiness in Slavery remix is particularly bad and just becomes something of an annoying noise after not too long. The only slightly interesting remix is that of Wish which extends this very underated song by a good few minutes . SOme ...

Advantages: Some very good remixes Disadvantages: Some rather overlong self indulgent remixes
Further down the Spiral is the remix companion of The Downward Spiral. Like the Fixed album of Broken remixes, the songs are treated with a sonic sledgehammer by a selection of artists including members of NineInchNails, Jim Thirwell (aka Foetus), Coil and rather surprisingly the Aphex Twin.
With the array of talent on board, you just know that this is going to be a startling album. The fact that the remixers have been given a free reign also means that some of the album sounds incredibly different to The Downward Spiral. Apart from a live version of Hurt and the remains of lyrics the musical similarities between the bulk of the two albums is incredibly small.
First up is a remix of Piggy by Rick Rubin which turns the song into a more trashy number with a constant techno pulse and breakbeat behind it. This is one of the remixes ...
Advantages: It's new...It's different........hell it grows on you.... Disadvantages: Not as noisy,or catchy as previous work.
out, not like previous albums where you normally pick out one on the first time round that just does it for you. But there again I was expecting something with more power, something with a bit more well you know your old reliable quick-fix good loud noise?
Well I guess everyone has a 'softer' side to their personality if this is the case then Mr.Manson showing his is not a bad thing when you get over your initial reaction. Once I've now sat down and listened to it a few times round and am a lot more taken with it.
I'd compare it sort of (don't hold me to it it's just my opinion) to the NineinchNails Fragile album in an obscure way, in that it's NOT all easy quick-fix listening - more something to listen to when in the right mood - If I'm making sense.
Basically if you are consider yourself a Marilyn Manson 'fan' then have a good ...
Advantages: Works extremely well as an album Disadvantages: More songs should have been chosen
NineInchNails mix albums have always had mixed welcomes. Both ‘Fixed’ and ‘The Downward Spiral’ received severe panning from critics and frustration from fans, impatient for the next ‘proper’ NIN album. Like it or lump it though, Trent has enough money and loyal fans to keep on doing them. Personally, I thought that next to none of the remixes on those records did the originals justice, but that that was unimportant. The mixes worked in context with each other, even though they were extremely different, to create a fantastic landscape, more akin to a soundtrack. This offering is no different, a collection of mixes from 1999’s ‘The Fragile’ double album, which sound slightly weak on their own, but come together to create a decent album.
