the success that Focus did. Getz regarded it as the most important recording of his life. Eddie Sauter, unique in being first a jazz writer and then a trained classical composer, wrote a series of seven pieces for a small chamber orchestra. He wrote parts for Getz's tenor. Getz wasn't happy with the classical notation and decided to improvise without written music. He had a photographic musical memory and he memorised the music instantly when the chamber group played it through for him. He filled the gaps that had been left for him with the most sublime improvisations that you could imagine. Sauter's writing had been brilliant and the consummation of tenor and chamber group is one of the great moments in jazz. During the period of the recordings Getz's mother died. The chamber unit recorded "Her" in his absence and he came in a day later and improvised to the tape. He obviously had his mother in mind and the result is incredibly moving. The long coda to the piece is one of the most beautiful and heart-stopping passages in the whole of jazz. --Steve Voce

Advantages: A great jazz collection Disadvantages: Stan is the only soloist
...I don't know if this album received that much attention when it came out but I've been listening to it lately a lot. I'm a saxophone player, and Getz is not even usually one of my favorites. I always thought his sound was too lightweight or something. The only albums I liked were the early Bossa Nova ones, but not any more. He plays so soulfully on this album, it's like he's literally crying, wailing, and his sound is so beautiful and big and perfect intonation--all the more amazing since he had terminal cancer at the time of the recording. You would never know it. This is a very arranged album with lots of horns and synthesized instruments and percussion and lots of different styles and grooves, but don't let that discourage you because it's very intimate and Stan is the only soloist, blowing all the way through. Occasionally...

Advantages: Near perfect saxophony. Disadvantages: Too smooth.
...The Very Best of StanGetz. Sax Moods.
The cost of this double CD varies, I actually got mine from a boot sale for £3, it can be bought on Amazon for less than a fiver.
StanGetz, to me, on tenor sax is like Kenny G is to soprano, Mr smooth. There is no doubt that this has been both his accolade and his downfall.
Traditional jazz fans may well find him too smooth, yet his pedigree and grounding was in some of the more bebop style bands. His 'tone' when playing has been called 'the sound' as it is pretty near perfect, now personally I like something a little more 'off' perfect.
This double CD is broadly (though not completely) split into two genres. The first CD is more traditional jazz tunes and ballads whilst the 2nd CD is dominated by Latin, Bossa Nova type tunes, not my favourite genre (CD 2).
The thing I do like about...

Advantages: Eminem is a good artist Disadvantages: Repetitive of songs
...Its a good album but it doesn't have a variety of different styles. It is all focused on one style, all of the backing is the same, with only the lyrics making them sound different. Their is a few relly good songs though. Stan is a good song, it is sad and talks about suicide, it is well written and is emotional. Eminem seems to focus a few songs on suicide and death. The best song on the album, must be, 'The real slim shady' which is different to the rest of the album, and gives a good break from the suicide he consentrates on. Overall this is a good album but isn't as good as all its hyped up to be....
