I Give This Album To You...
Review of Hundred Miles Or More, A (A Collection) - Alison Krauss by
BlueMidget
Advantages: Some great songs, great voice
Disadvantages: Read the review
...I came to purchase ‘A Hundred Miles Or More’.
Before I continue, I’d just like to say that whilst I have heard some of Alison’s other material, this is the first actual album of hers I’ve owned and so I can’t really comment with regard to how it compares to her others. Instead, I’ll try and rate ‘…Miles Or More’ based on it’s own merits.
~~~ A Hundred Miles Or More ~~~
To give it it’s full title, ‘A Hundred Miles Or More: A Collection’ was released ... ...definitely borderline samey.
‘A Hundred Miles Or More: A Collection’ is perhaps not the best introduction to Alison Krauss. That said, I think there’s plenty songs on the album that most people would be able to enjoy, (assuming you’re not devoted to one particular genre of music). Don’t be put off by Alison being a country/bluesgrass artist, since it is nothing more than a label that doesn’t really do justice to the actual quality of the music. ...
Alison Krauss + Union Station Live
Review of Live - Alison Krauss by
westie40
Advantages: Seriously talented Bluegrass performers
Disadvantages: A few weak tracks
I bought this CD after catching the second hallf of this concert when it was shown on BBC4. I'd never bought, or considered listening to Bluegrass before but was so taken by it that I ordered this double CD the next morning off Amazon.
It turns out that Alison Krauss is pretty well known in the States and gained immediate recognition for her talent with her first album "I've got that old feeling" (1990), when she was just a teenager. I'd never heard ... ...and hauntingly clear voice. In fact all my favourite tracks on this double CD are the ones that she sings. She also plays the fiddle rather well and she's nice looking - Wow, so much talent in one human being!
Her band, Union Station, are all seriously talented musicians with Dan Tyminski on guitar, mandolin and vocals, Ron Block on guitar banjo and vocals, Jerry douglas on dobro, Barry Bales on bass and Larry Atamanuik on drums. These guys provide ...
In Our Nature - Agreat follow up album
Review of In Our Nature - Jose Gonzalez by
ciao_rossi
Advantages: more songs from the great Gonzalez
Disadvantages: none
...of his experience. new album in our nature further explores Gonzalez's own personal ideas and ideals, influenced by his interest in the human condition and ideas of spirituality and nature this album reflects such ideas in its lyrics. The album flows as one complete work but with some stand out tracks in my opinion, not least the captivating and encapsulating 'Cycling Trivialities' which closes the album. an all encompassing take on the albums subject ...
Thea doesnt lie
Review of Liejacker - Thea Gilmore by
jcneil
Advantages: Great voice, Lyrics
Disadvantages: None
...age. Her eighth album entitled Liejacker is one of her best and has been critically acclaimed by the music press who consider her to be the greatest british songwriter of her generation.
You may have read my review of London's Bloomsbury Theatre where I saw Thea Gilmore in concert and met her in the foyer after the gig where she signed my copy of this album. I requested this album on dooyoo So without further ado here is my review of Thea Gilmore's ... ...May.
**Liejacker**
1. Old Soul
This is a nice duet with Dave McCabe of The Zutons, the track opens with a gentle guitar and then Thea's distinctive vocals come in with the beat of the drum coming in gently every few seconds. The addition of Dave McCabe works really well as he offers up an emotive clear vocal. A wonderful start.
2. Black Letter
This is a great track which has a darker feel to the opening track Old Soul. I love the Cello in this ...
Different....in an AMAZING way!
Review of Greatest Hits Of The 20th Century - Bela Fleck & The Flecktones by
JasD11
Advantages: Amazing tracks, great musicians!
Disadvantages: Communication
Bela Fleck & The Flecktones...an amazing array of just about everything you can put into a band while keeping it edgy, listenable, and exciting for the listener. This album in particular I picked up a few months back, and it's barely left my player since. I just can't get over the musicianship and technical work put into each song with such detail. If you enjoy Bela Fleck or even just heard a few songs and want to hear more go grab this album quick, ... ...--Sinister Minister--
Starts the album simple and funky enough with the work of the over-talented Victor Wooten on bass. Which is quickly joined by Bela Fleck on banjo and the ever elusive 'drumitar' worked by Future man. Which will set you in the groove of the song, and then enters an amazingly simple yet ever so catchy harmonica line that quickly becomes the basis of the song. Throughout the song each player shows real style and class and really ...
