The music is restrained yet emotional and seems to ebb and flow in all the right places with perfect timing. I've always enjoyed singers with unique voices Iris Dement would definitely fit in that category, her voice is pure unaffected and can send a shiver up your spine like few present day singers. That said her voice is not for everyone, my wife for one can't stand her, no accounting for taste! Anyway I think this is a suburb album by one of the best current female country artists. To label Iris simply as a country artist would ... ...style and sound. The emotion she can put into a song is breathtaking especially the brilliant "Our Town" which will appeal to anyone who comes from a small town which has seen better times. This is not a commercial country album the instrumentation mainly acoustic is traditional and the harmonies are right out of the 1950's. ...Opening with the title track Family the album starts well, the country start becomes a rockier track which covers all the reasons a family is what it is, and how it is, certainly it seems Leann has been lucky enough to have a family who have kept her rooted despite her success.
Next up is Nothin Better to do, followed up by Fight, the first ballardish on the album, a nice track which would fit in to the commercial market quite nicely, and is the ... ...has a similar theme to Family in that it is an observation that despite our differences people all want to have love, another poppy sounding song it has to be one of the best on the album.

I am the proud owner of 7 faith hill cds and this one next to'CRY' is one of my favourite. I even had to go out and rebuy it when my car stereo ate the disk and didn't want to give it me back. One thing faith hill does...the best...in my opinion is the power country ballads. ON this one you have a couple of her best and most moving...by far the most touching is...if i'm not in love with you! which starts of with a bit of piano and works its way up ... ...love with you

This cd would appeal to fans of new country but maybe a bit pop-like in places(eg i got my baby and if my heart had wings) for some but is quite main stream so i feel it would be enjoyed by anyone who likes great vocals, human lyrics and great melodies.
