I Give This Album To You...
Review of Hundred Miles Or More, A (A Collection) - Alison Krauss by
BlueMidget
Advantages: Some great songs, great voice
Disadvantages: Read the review
...I came to purchase ‘A Hundred Miles Or More’.
Before I continue, I’d just like to say that whilst I have heard some of Alison’s other material, this is the first actual album of hers I’ve owned and so I can’t really comment with regard to how it compares to her others. Instead, I’ll try and rate ‘…Miles Or More’ based on it’s own merits.
~~~ A Hundred Miles Or More ~~~
To give it it’s full title, ‘A Hundred Miles Or More: A Collection’ was released ... ...definitely borderline samey.
‘A Hundred Miles Or More: A Collection’ is perhaps not the best introduction to Alison Krauss. That said, I think there’s plenty songs on the album that most people would be able to enjoy, (assuming you’re not devoted to one particular genre of music). Don’t be put off by Alison being a country/bluesgrass artist, since it is nothing more than a label that doesn’t really do justice to the actual quality of the music. ...
Marcel Dadi - country guitar an' all.
Review of 6 And 12 String Guitar - Leo Kottke by
webfoot
Advantages: Unusual, highly talented flat picking guitarist
Disadvantages: Not any that I know of
There are well over a 100 possible review slots for Country Guitar on Ciao, and yet I can only find one review. I am not therefore expecting this review of little-known Marcel Dadi to be exactly what you might call a "whizz bang" in terms of general interest. Never mind!!!!
Marcel Dadi was a highly talented "flat picking" guitar specialist, and a personal friend of Chet Atkins. Sadly Marcel perished with all the 229 others aboard the Boeing 747 ... ...Island New York in July 1996 when he was at the relatively tender age of 44.
At that tragic time, he had just been honoured as a new entrant in the Nashville County Music Hall of Fame and was on his was back to France after the ceremony.
So why should I get wound up enough to write a review about a relatively obsure musician who I had never heard of until 3 years ago?His music was introduced to me by a French colleague, who had been taught guitar ...
Alison Krauss + Union Station Live
Review of Live - Alison Krauss by
westie40
Advantages: Seriously talented Bluegrass performers
Disadvantages: A few weak tracks
I bought this CD after catching the second hallf of this concert when it was shown on BBC4. I'd never bought, or considered listening to Bluegrass before but was so taken by it that I ordered this double CD the next morning off Amazon.
It turns out that Alison Krauss is pretty well known in the States and gained immediate recognition for her talent with her first album "I've got that old feeling" (1990), when she was just a teenager. I'd never heard ... ...and hauntingly clear voice. In fact all my favourite tracks on this double CD are the ones that she sings. She also plays the fiddle rather well and she's nice looking - Wow, so much talent in one human being!
Her band, Union Station, are all seriously talented musicians with Dan Tyminski on guitar, mandolin and vocals, Ron Block on guitar banjo and vocals, Jerry douglas on dobro, Barry Bales on bass and Larry Atamanuik on drums. These guys provide ...
An Angelic Voice
Review of Somebody - Connie Dover by
newbee123
Advantages: Groundbreaking Recording, Charming Angelic Voice
Disadvantages: Not used to Celtic Melodies
...to track ---
1. Somebody (3:41) ~~ 5/5
A great opening with the airy instrumental chords, then Dover's pure and clear voice caught my attention immediately. It is an Irish or Scottish song in 18th Century. I like the melodies.
2. The Baron O' Brackley (6:15) ~~ 4/5
The melody is strange to me, but the rhythm & sound of the pipe solo is delightful to me.
3. On Castle Rock (4:50) ~~ 3/5
A pure instrumental piece, the pipe is leading the melody. ... ...Another strange melody, but Dover's angelic voice makes me to close up my eye to feel it. 5. Jack of Diamonds (4:20) ~~ 5/5
This track I like it more! The lively tuned of the rhythm is more familiar to me, is a song of America comes from Southern Missouri.
6. Cantus (6:16) ~~ 5/5
The language of this track is mixed in English and Irish (?), is a 14th century Irish monastic tradition. I like it so much although I can't really understand what she ...
