Bound to make you both happy and sad

Advantages: -

Every review I've ever read about Jeff Buckley tells what a great singer he was. Well he got it from his dad, Tim, and whatever was in the Buckley family vocal genes I'd like to have some of that too please. This album, originally released on that great old LA label Elektra in 1969, and co-produced by The Lovin' Spoonful's duo of Jerry Yester and Zal Yanovsky, is one sweet, sweet trip through the extraordinary vocal talents of this man. Born in ...
...lady on 30 June 1975. Oh, the good ones they do die young. Buckley had an amazing range, going right from falsetto all the way down to a deep snarl. I don't think I've ever heard a male singer capable of doing the same. Yes, so much of this album sounds like the boys just set out camp in the San Francisco panhandle, smoked some dope and dropped some acid, then got on with the business of making a record, but remember this was 1968! Paris was burning, ...

Early Cash and I don't mean money

Advantages: Classic , fresh , raw , entertaining , a little piece of history .
Disadvantages: May be too dated for some .

...brother bought "Johnny Cash live at St Quentin" and it was a real eye opener, or should I say ear opener to me. Previously to this I had sort of heard him in passing but not taken that much notice. As a flighty teenager he had seemed far too old and straight to appeal to me. It took my advancing years to truly get a feel for the man and his music. However "San Quentin" was one of the first rungs on the ladder. My boyfriend at the time, and Husband ...
...is Country. Johnny Cash At San Quentin "San Quentin" was recorded on February 24th 1969, two days before Cash’s 37th birthday, at a concert held in San Quentin prison for the inmates. It quickly became a bestseller and topped various music charts. This was the fourth time Cash had appeared and played at San Quentin, the first being on January 1st 1958. After a rain soaked performance in the prison yard in 1958, Cash won the respect of the hardened ...

Two Buckley albums for the price of one.

Advantages: Lyircal completeness, 2 albums in one
Disadvantages: Not everyone likes this sort of thing

...of the album taken from Tim Buckley, his first album. Both these albums have the story telling magic of lyricist/poet Larry Beckett, and the vocal's and musical wizardry of Tim Buckley. Tim's music was (early in his career) knwon for a strong and atheletic voice capable of reaching any high's or low's, and is said to have had a 5 octave voice. Track listing 1. I Can't See You 2. Wings 3. Song Of The Magician 4. Strange Street Affair Under Blue ...
...but astonishing lyrics about how Tim left his wife. Although not the greatest of subjects perhaps, the lyrics give the song a soft and easy feel of love of the mother of his child, but also a feeling that he can't go back to her. Beckett's lyrics here really do stand apart from most lyricist's since. A song anyone would be proud to do a half decent cover of, due to how well Buckley produces the goods. 10/10 Song of the magician, The simple musical ...

The Man In Black at his best

Advantages: Great travelogue in music of the Old West
Disadvantages: None

This is a fascinating album presenting Johnny Cash as a singer and a narrator. Each track is preceded by the haunting sound in the background of a steam locomotive and its whistle while Johnny tells a story of the song he is about to sing. Track 1 - Loading Coal (4mins.59secs.) The travelogue begins with a recital of place-names of America and continues with the thundering names of the indian tribes who lived here first. Then Johnny boards the ...
...country of Kentucky. He presents a brief character sketch of a boy whose father is a miner. "Loading Coal" tells the story of a miner who never expects to get rich but still follows the tradition of his family. Track 2 - Slow Rider(4.10) The train then moves westward onto the prairies where we meet the outlaw John Wesley Hardin, whose murderous life is described with sincerity. Then we meet another westerner, a saddle tramp who rides an old horse. ...

Hello, I'm Johnny Cash

Advantages: You feel like you're there
Disadvantages: Should be listen to in full

Is the amazing why this CD opens. Its relaxing choice of songs, that fact that its done live and has Johnnys links into the songs makes it all seems as though Johnny is actually doing a performance for you. There's a nice banter between inmates and Johnny Cash, it makes you realise that he was once an inmate, and that he's been in the position of the audience, he knows how the feel. You can tell they share this bond through the recording, through ...
...inmates react to lyrics and links. I think the fact that it has some songs on there that arent well known, and i think a couple that werent released but dont hold me to that!! All add to the feel of the CD, you might complain that it doesnt have some of his classics on there, but i think taking into consideration the venue, audience it couldn't have been a better line up. A reasonably relaxing CD, great for listening to in the casr when you stuck ...
