Korn were in my opinion the pioneers of nu-rock, and if not that, they were surely the guys who opened the floodgates for a lot of the heavy bands you hear today. I remember around the time of the release of Freak On A Leash, Korn was on everybodies lips, grain farmers were loving the attention. (sorry, I couldn’t resist just one!)
Sadly they were only famous for about a week, and then their prodigé’s, the gorrila-gram Fred Durst and co. conquered the mainstream with their fresh brand of rock-rap crossover. Korn’s newest album at the time, Follow the Leader, deserved greater attention than it was paid, as it is on of the best rock/metal albums of this era.
I think it is one of very few albums that grabs you kicking and screaming right from the start and never lets you go. Korn have assembled an almost flawless lineup of hard hitting rage fests, deep and thoughtful numbers, and some pure stonking tracks. The number of sheer quality songs is what makes this such a winner in my eyes, there are no duff pieces that flaw the album as a whole. Almost every song has a point in it that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, and that is my favourite measure of how good the music is, meaning this album is unforgettable.
Korn is quite different from other new rock music around. It is just as empowered with anger, yet the vocals often have a kind of sweet innocence to them. Not what you’d expect from heavy rock. Their frontman often uses his "girly" high, whining voice to get his disturbed messages across, but just as often uses the rage intensified screaming, or the ever comical deranged monkey sounds.
This music is clever, inventive, and original. The lyrics are always fresh, carrying strong messages of rage and loathing, and the delivery is always superb. The guitar work is among the best in the business, with powerful choruses mixed with deep flowing tunes, and the ever present almost strumming bass. And little things in the songs manage to keep them fresh after several listens, for example in Children of the Korn, while the main lyrics going on, there is a guy screaming poignant lines in the background, which all adds to the flavour of the song.
I would say the music is in parts quite experimental, and always well pulled off. The songs are heavyweight hitters with lyrics second to none (well, maybe second to RaTM, but that’s unavoidable!). All rather good considering everyone cries that Korn sold out and became mainstream cissy stuff!

Advantages: Kick Ass! My favourite tracks are Got the life, Freak on a leash, Pretty, and the bonus track(don't know what it's called) Disadvantages: 12 blank tracks are really annoying.

Advantages: Groundbreaking experimental and inventive Disadvantages: Bizarre sounds unsettle you. Disturbing traumatizing expletive lyrics not for the fainthearted

Advantages: Lots of excellent consistent hard and soft rock tracks! Disadvantages: There are none if you like weird rock music. If you don't then this is probably not you're type of music
