This is one of Korn's originals. The tunes are funky for a metal band and really catchy.
The cd takes a while to load on any normal cd player as for some unknown reason the first track is number 13 !! So, unless you skip your player to start at 13 you will have to listen to nothingness for a while.
The album sleeve is a really well illustrated scene that continues on the inside of the case and onto the cd disc. The illustration of children following a little girl for miles to the cliff edge is in black and white and is eye catching as it is unusual.
Korn consists of : Reg "Fieldy" on bass, "Munky" on guitar, "Head" on guitar, David on drums and of course, Jonathan Davis as lead singer (and also bagpipes). This album was released in 1997 and is their third major success. the previous albums being: "Korn", and "Life is Peachy".
The songs:
The first 4 songs (numbers 13-16) are well known and played many times on tv channels such as kerrang or skuzz. "Freak on a Leash" was once voted best video at the MTV awards. These songs are upbeat, funky and the guitar riffs are typical of most Korn music. They are "its on!", "Freak on a Leash", "Got the Life", "Dead Bodies Everywhere" and are frequently played at rock clubs or rock nights. All four have the same upbeat, fun metal that just makes you want to bop around or (more commonly known) "Mosh"!
The next 4 songs are just as kooky and weird with excellent guitar riffs thrown in. They are "Children of the Korn", "BBK", "Pretty" and "All in the Family" which features a lenghty argument between jonathan Davis and the lead singer of Limp Bizkit, Fred Durst. These songs have a similar musical theme also. These few are geared more towards a rap type rather than guitar bashing.
The next 4 seem quite sad and if you take moments to listen to the lyrics they are both upsetting and explicit. The songs mention a troubled childhood by the singer and his anger is clearly vented out through the songs "Seed" and "My gift to you".
Mood of Album?
Its great to listen to in a friends house and makes nice background music during a drinking session! (providing you like alternative sounds). The mood changes throughout the album but the main guitar theme stays constant and weird. Makes you want to sing when any songs played at a rock club.
Impression?
Overall the album lacks continuinity and all the fun songs are at the start then throghout the album it gets serious. The album is clearly directed to a specific group of people and being as it is the third of their album releases, they have already build that specific fan base. Young rockers will love this album but its a big miss for anyone over 30!
To buy or not to buy?
For alternative metal fans yes. For Death metal fans no as Korns way of playing completely breaks all traditional guitar playing rules! For pop fans Stay Away!! Available at music shops such as HMV for around £12.99 (it was £15.99 when i bought it 3 years ago) but not available in supermarket stores due to explicit content. Its also not available as a popular choice and its rare that Korn albums reach a normal supermarket charts.
Explicit content?
I mean some minor swearing but graphic content relating to abuse or being bullied when young. Might upset anyone affected or any first time Korn listeners, but no major F words or anything silly.
Buy it if you like weird alternative metal!

Good review! I personally can't stand Korn, I hate Jon Davis' voice and the way all he can sing about is how much everyone hates him, in a similar way to Morrissey! Still, I suppose its a matter of taste! :op

Hey! I like Fred! Yeah I have one too, he's called Deadsy (named after the band Jon Davis signed to his label) and he went to see KoRn with me when I saw em in Glasgow :-D

Advantages: Groundbreaking experimental and inventive Disadvantages: Bizarre sounds unsettle you. Disturbing traumatizing expletive lyrics not for the fainthearted
