Forgive Durden are a band who have not been around for a while. I got into them when going to see the band Panic! At The Disco (see A Fever You Can't Sweat Out review). They were the bands support act and I listened to their music and actually quite liked it. It seemed easy listening and not too heavy but unique in it's own way. Being the music fan that I am I looked further into the band's music and can now say this is on of my most played albums of the minute.
So Forgive Durden come from Seattle in Washington. They are Thomas Dutton on vocals and guitar, Jesse Bauer on bass, Andy Mannino on drums and Thomas Hunter a.k.a Big T on guitar. Thomas and Andy first met in high school then Thomas met Jesse in university. Thomas Hunter had been a friend of Jesse's for a while and they convinced him to join the band. They first recorded an EP in 2004 which I haven't heard. They just released the album Wonderland which is the title not Wonderlad which I accidentally submitted.

1.ANTS : This is probably my favourite song at the moment. A great song to start an album off with. The song starts off really good guitar piece and then the other instruments kick in. It's a very easy to like catchy rhythm. The vocals
are quite hushed and deep but I like the way they are delivered. Thomas has a voice which doesn't annoy but he sings really well. The chorus is really fast moving and you will be moving in no time. This song you would think is about the insects but I think from what I interpret it is much more clever than that. I think it is about making it big but not getting too caught up in your own fame. "I watch as my investment is swarmed by the busy ants" I think this is about the guys high up that will take their money and promise fame. "Few have cut their strings, and risked it all to chase their dreams, most seek the quick buck" It's basically saying that you don't want to ruin your chances by making wrong decisions and how the music industry is quite a risky business.
2. BEWARE THE JUB JUB: This song has a bizarre title and I heard the song before the title but I thought if I saw a song called that I'd be put off. Don't be, it is one of the most stand out tracks on the album. I love how it starts very pain felt I think. The hard guitar sound and then Thomas starts singing with a lot of emotion in his voice. The chorus is really good, the rhythm is mid-tempo but it's one of those songs you will get in your head and like right away. Thomas reaches a lot of high notes I this song and his voice really does go well in this song. Some of the lyrics are quite unusual and sometimes it is hard to pick up on what he is singing. Near the end of the song it goes from being quite mid rhythm to a slowed down song and I like how they have chosen to slow it down to an end. It doesn't in any way ruin the song but gives it a nice change so it doesn't get too repetitive. The song words are hard to gather some kind of meaning out of. It seems to be about a confident woman but yet she does not sound mortal as she is looking for prey and the words go "Every meal tastes alike but I want something I can bite". I got the impression it was about a woman looking for the right person in her life but they have portrayed her as a vampire. Unusual but I suppose it makes for an interesting and different way of writing a song.
3. EAR TO EAR: This song starts very loud and quickly and another very quick paced rhythm. I like the upbeat start to this album. Thomas has a different vocal style here, it's very quick and fun but it is still good. It's a different sound to the other songs as the music changes a lot in it but I like how no part is similar. It isn't the strongest song on the album but it seems very dramatic the music style. There is not really an easy to interpret song so I will not bother to explain a definition. It's a good song on the album but not a potential single.
5. TANGO DELLA SIGNORA: The title of this song is very long and another strange one. I wasn't sure what to expect when I read the title. It starts with a drum and this is a very tango type rhythm. I like how it does sound like the kind of music for a tango and the guitar in it is great. A very slow pace to the song not loud and full of music but it's effective. The chorus is quicker and gets louder, Thomas sings with a lot of feeling and reaches notes with ease. It isn't my favourite song but I love how it is completely different from anything I've heard. The song sounds like it's about seduction I suppose being about tango it seems appropriate. They work in words about doing the dance as well as some sort of attraction.
6. A DEAD PERSON BREATHED ON ME: This is such a strange track. It is only 1.34 and is like a mini song to break the album up. It's just an acoustic guitar playing slowly with vocals in the background. It's to show Thomas's vocals off I think, he sings it really nicely and isn't drowned out by the guitar. Some might find this pointless and dull but I think it's quite a nice short break in between songs.
7. THE GREAT AFFAIR IS TO MOVE: I love the start of the song, a fun guitar intro. It starts really lively and upbeat. The drums kick in and the song really picks up and then Thomas starts to sing and it goes kind of slow but then a short quick guitar pace comes in then stops and the singing begins again. Quite a good rhythm because you think the song has gone from high to low but it keeps going on quite nicely. The chorus is quite hollow sounding just light guitar and vocals. The guitar intro comes back throughout the song again. This is the most exciting part of the song I feel with a good intro it could have had better potential but it ended up going quite dull. After a wile the rhythm gets a bit irritating. The song seems to be about travelling the world and starting out and working towards the dream.
Those are the only tracks I am going to write about because I feel going through every track gets a bit boring. They are a band who have produced a very good first album. They are on the label Fueled By Ramen and the album can be bought on Amazon's Marketplace, ebay or amazon.com or
What I like about the album is that I feel they have really experimented and tried a complete range of sounds. No track sounds exactly the same so out of it all you are bound to find a couple of songs you like. I don't hate any song on the album and that has to be a good thing.
If I were to pick any negatives with the album I would maybe say that a couple of songs start off promising but then end up going nowhere. Also, a lot of them are album tracks but they lack a lot of major standout songs. However, remembering this is a first album I still don't feel I can over criticize.
