Advantages: Loads of goodies in one place Disadvantages: Crap name for a band
'Ride', 'My Bloody Valentine' and various others. Everything was messy back then, the hair, the sound (in a good way), the clothes (remember Ned's Atomic Dustbin?) This in the middle of the Madchester scene and everyone was picking up their guitars again (thanks mainly to 'The Jesus & Mary Chain' and 'The Stone Roses').
Not many survived those years, and even fewer went on to create the lush sounds that the Fannies did. In my view bands with guitars/drums and bass tended to fail back into a particular mould, for instance, Oasis attempted to be 'The Beatles' sound-a-likes and Primal Scream 'The Rolling Stones'. To my ears TeenageFanclub most definetly became 'The Byrds'. It's impossible to get away from the comparison. But that said, they do it very well!
So this collection..Any good?..
An emphatic 'YES'. It's brilliant. It's good ...
Advantages: 13 great songs, brilliant guiar Disadvantages: no lyric sheet
Just as Scottish popsters TeenageFanclub looked like they were going to hit the big time or at least take America by storm they released 'Thirteen'. They were widely tipped for global sucess after their previous offering 'Bandwagonesque' but this is not 'Bandwagonesque'. It is so much better and therefore was sure to fail commercially. Few listners could resist the chiming guitars, the jangly pop and lush layered guitar melodies and 'Thirteen' has this formalic style in droves but with a harder edge'. Not overly supprising is the fact that there are thirteen songs on this album.
'Hang On' sounds like we have picked up a Metallica album by mistake with its heavy fuzzy tuneless guitars before it sweeps into Byrds/ Beach Boys whimsical melodic pop. Though a wall of sound feel lasts throughout the song it is impossibly melodic. There is ...
Advantages: Melodies Waxing Lyrical. Disadvantages: Smiley Tunes Can Give You Lockjaw.
If you fancy some jangle pop then the place to be is chez TeenageFanclub. Combining Wilsonesque harmonies with fluid melodious guitar moves, Howdy! is a superb album even by the Fanclub's extremely high standards. It's effortless beauty is like suntan lotion, you don't notice how good it is until you stop using it.
It all started back in the early nineties when 4 longhaired dudes smiled out at us on MTV's Alternative Nation. As the glitter fell slowly from the sky, the epic sound of ‘Starsign' entranced us. The resulting album 'Bandwagonesque' has rightly attained genuine classic status. Along the way TeenageFanclub have defied the odds and got even better. 1995's Grand Prix was an extraordinary effort.
Howdy! released on the now defunct Creation Records contains 12 tracks of all too rare charm. The quality is so high ...
