Winehouse is no name for the kind of voice that Amy has! Let's clear this up right now, although some have compared her with Macy Gray-she really only sounds the tiniest amount like her. I think the comparrison serves really to group her amongst other innovative and distinguisahble vocalists.
Reviewing Frank her debut album; I will endeavor to be Frank. I am not going to say anything about her public persona as I dont think this is the most interesting or special thing about this lady. I sometimes feel like the media concentrates far too much on the behaviour of a given star instead on really just how good an artist they. In this case I will agree she is probably a bitch (as many of my friends try to convince me) and I have heard some stories from co-workers and friends who went to my school (same school as Amy) and were in her year (she is a few years younger than me). But I really dont think this should bare any relevance on her clear abilities as a song writer and vocalist.
Her vocals are best descrived as Jazz R&B and her voice is really strong as well as subtle depending on the desired effect of the song and deliverance of the lyrics. Although her vocals are really distinguishable from women in her league, its really her lyrics that make the beautiful contrast that fans will love. Her music is smooth, driven tunefully with her sweet voice and yet the content of each song is harsh to say the least.
This album is really a find and has a really innovative and organic feel to it. The songs are catchy and will grow on you quickly. It's great for the background but even better if you pay attention to her witty attacking lyrics which will never fail to twist your lips a little at the corners.
The sound of the music varies between soulful and Spanish Guitary and can definitely feels like a brilliant juxtapose of old fashioned and contempory.
Best songs on this album are 'F*ck Me Pumps', 'Stronger Than Me' and 'What Is It About Men'. But all tracks have a smouldering simmering diva quality to them that makes them totally appealable to both Women and Men equelly. Truly fantastic, even if she is a bitch.
Summary: She might be a bitch but she is a brilliant singer/songwriter!
