I have to say, Franz Ferdinand's self-titled album is definetely, in my opinion, without a doubt, hands down, THE best album of 2004. Not even Usher's Confessions, Avril Lavigne's Under My Skin(well, hardly any competition here), Alanis Morisette's So Called Chaos, Ash's Meltdown, Keane's Hopes and Fears, Snow Patrol's Final Straw and even Scissor Sister's self-tited album(although VERY close) are good enough to beat Franz Ferdinand's debut album. It is too good to put down(or take out of your stereo) and too fun to not dance to(and look like an idiot) that anyone who doesn't own this album should be ashamed. But I've had friends who HATE HATE HATE Franz Ferdinand and friends who love their CD to death, so I guess you can either love it or hate it.
I first heard Franz Ferdinand's music on MTV, their video of Take Me Out was original and the guitars were so powerful it's hard not to like it. But I was one of those people who thought, "I bet it's one of those bands who release a great single and you never hear of them again". How wrong I was. About a month later, I heard their second single Matinee(or Dark of the Matinee) on the radio. I immdiately decided that I HAD to own the album but I still wasn't quite sure. So I went to amazon's website and listened to a couple of 30-second sample tracks and as soon as I heard the first song Jacqueline, I knew I was going to love this band.
I suppose many people, along with me, think Franz Ferdinand's lyrics strange and not make sense yet at the same time, love it. For example, on my favourite song out of the entire album, Michael, the lyrics go "Michael you're the only one I'll ever want, only one I'll ever want", which is very strange considering the whole band are male, but I suppose they are just not taking themselves seriously and are just having a good time? I doubt they're gay or anything.
Anyway, I'm not very good at pursuading people to buy things, but if you're someone who wants a break from the cheesy pop tunes or mainstream music you're listening to, yet not go as far as listening to indie or punk or jazz, this album is perfect for you. If you're someone who's looking for a good time, or just pure good music, this album is also perfect for you.
And finally, here are my ratings of the songs out of Franz Ferdinand's self-titled album.
1. Jacqueline 4/5 Great tune, funny lyrics.
2. Tell Her Tonight 5/5 I love Alex's voice on this song.
3. Take Me Out 5/5 Love the guitars on this track.
4. Matinee 5/5 Probably the only song that appeals to mainstream audience most.
5. Auf Acshe 4/5 Cna get a little annoying with repetitive lyrics.
6. Cheating On You 4/5 Cool tune
7. This Fire 5/5 A memorable track
8. Darts of Pleasure 4/5 Rumoured to be their fourth single
