Freak of Nature, the second album from former wedding singer Anastacia Newkirk, continues ... more
the late-1980s funk pop revival that her debut Not That Kind started. And in true 1980s style, everything's big. From the striding groove of the title track to the flag-waving chorus on "Paid My Dues" and the aerobic workouts of "One Day in Your Life" and "Don't Stop (Doin' It)", her larger-than-life vocals are matched at every turn by feisty attitudes and pounding tunes. As before, sincerity-challenged power ballads are the only sticking point; although this time they're kept to a minimum, and while it may be hard to tell her apart from Mariah and company on "I Dreamed of You", it provides ample opportunity to secure fragile crockery before her ferocious wail revs up again. Sticking to the anthemic Chaka Khan formula makes Freak of Nature a dependable follow-up album, but when it charts the middle ground between ballad and bombast--as with "Overdue Goodbye" and "Secrets"--it betters its predecessor. With lingering melodies and tender funk struts, Anastacia prooves she doesn't have to positively belt out a tune in order to soar. --Mark Daniels

Advantages: Great secon album. Disadvantages: None! Ani is GR8!
...before, Ani’s first two albums, Freak of Nature and Not that Kind focus more on her R n’ B style. I am not really the kind of person that likes R n’ B singers, I know that it is a bit hard to get away from them at the moment because there are so many of them about from both Great Britain and the USA. However, this is an R n’ B album that you can really sit down and listen to.
So what are the songs like?
Track 1 – Freak ... ...really unbelievable. This track – Freak of Nature – was written not because Ani is a freak, but because her voice is a freaky black voice, trapped inside a white body. This track is amazing. Hence 9/10.
Track 2 – Paid my dues.
This song was a huge success in both the USA and here in Britain. Are you surprised? The words in this song relate to so many problems that people occur throughout their lives. This is probably ... more
The greatest voice on the planet by my verdict belongs to Anastacia. If you have read my review on Anastacia’s latest album self-titled Anastacia then you would probably guess from that that I am absolutely in love with this wonderful woman. In her latest album we see more of Anastacia's rock voice, however we cannot forget that her voice used to be defined as an R n’ B style voice. No matter what she sings I think that Anastacia can pull it off better than anything that I have ever heard. (P.s if you haven’t read my review on her newest album then please check it out.
The thing that I love about Anastacia is not just her great voice and amazing looks. I am also enthralled by her amazing personality. I have never actually seen or heard an interview either in magazines or on the television that slashes her work, and yet she doesn’t seem bigheaded about it. I think that Anastacia is the queen of modesty and that is such a great thing that an artist can have today, because most seem to think that just because they are famous that they are automatically better than us. But Ani seems to be a person that you could sit down with and have a great personality.
I cannot believe that Anastacia isn’t a bigger artist. In fact it wasn’t until her latest album that she became famous in her native country of America. I think that this is mostly due to the fact that Ani wouldn’t do anything to boost her career, like getting married twice in 9 months, mentioning no names… Britney.
Well enough about my personal feelings on the great star Anastacia, I better tell you my personal feelings about her album. Well as I mentioned before, Ani’s first two albums, Freak of Nature and Not that Kind focus more on her R n’ B style. I am not really the kind of person that likes R n’ B singers, I know that it is a bit hard to get away from them at the moment because there are so many of them about from both Great Britain and the USA. However, this is an R n’ B album that you can really sit down and listen to.
So what are the songs like?
Track 1 – Freak of nature.
Ani has been compared to black singers such as Alicia Keyes, and I can see where the people that said it are coming from. Her ‘black’ sounding voice is really unbelievable.
This is probably my favourite song on the album and I love it! Therefore I am going to give it a modest 11/10. (Can I do that???)
Track 3 – Overdue Goodbye.
This is a surprisingly calm song compared to others on this album, and indeed by her standards. The song is still amazing though. I think that it is great that Ani doesn’t just have a loud voice, but is able to control her voice in quiet songs like this. My rating 9/10
Track 4 – You’ll never be Alone.
At first I though that this was the famous Liverpool FC football chant. This song is anything but a chant. Its great lyrics are truly amazing. The song starts off pretty slow, but picks up in no time at all. There is also a great instrumental piece in this song, which I love. Rated by me as 9/10
Track 5 – Some day in your life.
This song has a deceitful start that makes you think that it is going to be a soft ballad like its predecessor You’ll never be Alone. This song is anything but quiet. We get another blast from Ani's strong voice. Another amazing song on what is appearing to be a great album. My rating 10/10.
Track 6 – How come the world won’t stop.
A great vocal performance again by Ani in yet another ballad. It seems strange to listen to Ani singing a soft ballad after listening to songs like Some day in your Life, but it just proves that Ani has a great range to her singing voice. Another 10/10.
Track 7 – Why’d you lie to Me.
This is a song that most people can relate to. Ani has found out that her lover has just done the dirty on her. He must be a fool! So another strong performance by the queen of relaxed Ani. 9/10.
Track 8 – Don’tcha Wanna.
The albums funky song. I cannot really say that any of the songs on this album are really toe-tapping songs. However, they are all great sing along songs! This sound like a great song to see performed live by Ani. I give this song 9/10.
Track 9 – Secrets.
Yet another Ani ballad on this amazing album. I am really starting to come round to the thought of R n’ B songs. I really like this song and like all of her songs they really have meanings and great lyrics. Performed on top of her great voice this song is a recipe for success. 9/10
Track 10 – Don’t Stop (Doin’ It)
This is the kinda thing that you want a woman like Ani to say to you! This is probably the track on the album that is easiest to dance to. It is also another great sing along song. Co-written by Ani herself, more great vocals and lyrics. 9/10
Track 11 – I dreamed you.
Accompanied by a classical piano, Ani shows us the range of her vocals in this ballad. It is a great song to listen two when you’re down in the dumps. It won’t cheer you up, but it will help your mood. I’m not saying that then song is down in the dumps, I’m just saying that it is a great quiet song. 10/10, because of its appeal to me if I am sad.
Track 12 – Overdue Goodbye (Reprise)
Not really a lot you can say about this song. Other than it is a soulful mix taken from track 3. 9/10.
Well all tracks on this album score a 9/10 or higher by myself. I would give this album a 9/10 if it wasn’t for the great song Paid my Dues. I think that any album with a great song like that would be boosted by its great vocals. This album proves to us all that Ani can pull of any song, whether it is a quiet soulful song or a great rock song that we can hear in her newest album. I really like her style.
It is because the album has a great range of songs, rather than all songs of one type, that really makes the album in my view. Even if, like me you are not the kind of person that enjoys R n’ B songs, I promise you that there is a song on the album that you can enjoy and relate to. I love Anastacia, plain and simple.
Album rating 10/10
Thanks for reading, please check out my OP on the album Anastacia and check back tomorrow because I am planning to review her other album Not that Kind! I will then have all 3 in my OP’s.
Advantages: a wide range of songs that everyone can relate to,an unusual voice Disadvantages: not everyones cup of tea
...you'll get don't you?
Freak of nature = The song introduces itself with anastacia singing "I'm a freak" without any music background and with it fading in.Then the music starts. It's quite a happy upbeat song and she then says the following before singing "Excuse me,what did you say to me?Oh no you didn't,no i'm not,i'm sorry but,I ain't that kind of girl".This song gives me a feel that you don't care what anyone thinks about you.She is accepting ... ...The CD itself has freak of nature written across it and is a orangy/red background colour.
So liek I said buy this album if you want a feel good album with songs you can relate to.I understand that it is not the best album around and it is a year odl at least but I can guarantee you won't be disappointed and if you are well you can sue me but I have no money :-P
Hope you enjoyed this review and i'll be writing some more soon.

Advantages: great mix of tracks, that voice! Disadvantages: You may buy Alicia Keys instead
...off! Anastacia is not a freak of nature- it refers to her voice as when people first heard her voice they expected her to be black. Not heard of the album? Well it has been released to capitalise on the huge success and so far only one single has been released. Anastacia either thrills you through to the very bone with her amazing voice or turns you off and reminds you of forgotten 80's singer- Taylor Dayne. Either way- she has made a huge impact ... ...Here's my review: FREAK OF NATURE- ANASTACIA- (EPIC RECORDS) ========================================== After the huge success of Not That Kind, it was inevitable that the follow up would be on the cards. But is it any good? TRACK 1 FREAK OF NATURE *************** A funky little number - this reminds you of Macy Gray with a touch of Lopez. Advantages: Great songs, see op Disadvantages: No. 11
...song in depth:
1. Freak Of Nature
This song opens with a great line “I’m a Freak”. What a way to open an album. The beat to this is slow, steady and good. She is holding the song together well, it has a great set of lyrics, good backing, and a great voice. In the middle it loses it a bit, she does this talking ‘thing’ that ruins the song, but otherwise her choice of instruments is great as well, they complement the ... ...track. The opening is the best. She does that annoying talking, but the little intro is great. The lyrics are really ‘hum able’ as well: “even got punched in the face in LA, and nothing in the world that can keep me from doing what I want to do”. Anastacia means business and her lyrics reflect this. She is proving to us that women are just as strong at withholding all these problems. The chorus is great, you always find yourself ...

Advantages: some really good tunes Disadvantages: some really bad tunes, no lyrics supplied to sing along with the really good tunes
I've liked Anastacia since I first heard the track "I'm Outta Love" and instantly fell in love with it. Since then, I have liked most of the singles she has released, the funky "Paid My Dues" being my favourite. This song was the first release from her second album, "Freak of Nature" and was my reason for buying the cd in the first place.
The opening and title track "Freak of Nature" provides a funky upbeat introduction to this album - a great beat ... ...rest combine to make an unbelievably catchy track, although the talking at the beginning of the song is a little irritating. After this, the misleadingly slow and eerie sounding introduction of "Paid My Dues" (her best tune to date, as I said before) leads us into this very r & b style track with its fantastic music and strong chorus, a story of Anastacia's struggle to get where she is now. Undoubtedly the best track on the album, in my opinion.

Advantages: FANTASTIC singer! Disadvantages: I paid £12!
...worth it.
Track 1: Freak of Nature:
The title of the album, Freak of Nature is Anastacia singing about herself, about how she’s different; one of a kind and she’s going to come and change your world. I like how people think a freak of nature is a bad thing, but sometimes, and in this case, they can be good things. The song is very funky and up beat, and is an explosion to the beginning of the album.
Track 2: Paid My Dues:
This is my favorite ... ...example, the first song is Freak of Nature, which is the name of the album, and it's like an introduction of herself to the listeners. And calling herself a freak of nature is clever and it works! Then the songs in the middle of the album seem as though they are songs depicting scenarios you experience thoughout life, which i like. And then the final song is Overdue Goodbye. This is obviously in reference to someone in her life, but also seems like ...

Advantages: just plain old good music Disadvantages: as long as you like anastacia - you'll love it
This woman has to have one of the best voices Ive heard in years - a favourite of various other celebrities - including micheal jackson, president bush etc.
So you could say she appeals to people of every walk of life.
Regardless of whether or not you like (i say broadly)"this kind of music" - there is a definate confidence about anastacia's voice.
This my favourite of anastacias albums - purely because of the songs and their lyrics.
This is one of those albums that you play to death when you get it - then you forget you've got it - until you hear one of the songs.
The trigger song for me is her new release with Ben Moody - excellent song - excellent showcase for two brilliant voices.
Girls - this is one to put on when ur doing the housework - its definately a sing a long

Album Notes
Personnel includes: Anastacia, Faith Evans (vocals); Miklos Malek (various instruments); Eric Kupper (acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, bass, drums); Chieli Minucci (acoustic & electric guitars); Chris Camozzi (guitar); Joel Derouin, Becky Bunnell (violin); Roland Kata, Denyse Buffum (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Sharon Bryant, Audrey Wheeler, Nicole Renee (background vocals). Producers: Richie Jones, Ric Wake, Sam Watters, Louie Biancaniello. Sporting the cleavage-and-bare-midriff look that's requisite early-21st century pop femme-wear, the Berlin-transplanted, Brazilian-born blonde bombshell drops her sophomore album with all the subtlety of a Pamela Anderson video. While her vocals lack the is-she-or-isn't-she breathlessness of a Britney Spears or Mandy Moore (it's pretty obvious Anastacia isn't, and hasn't been for a while), she does project an unmistakable earthiness and raw sexuality, notably in the album's title track and "Why'd You Lie to Me?" both of which find her in a feisty mood. Pity the fool who'd even think about getting on her bad side. Anastacia channels Chaka Khan in the Brazilian-inflected rhythms of "Don't Cha Wanna" and shows her quieter, if no less uncompromising side, in "Overdue Goodbye" ("this is a message--pay attention...") which features perhaps the weirdest yet recorded pronunciation of "goodbye," but is nevertheless a charming excursion into Anastacia's gentler mode. With a couple of Celine-style ballads ("Hold On," "I Dreamed You") that also lighten the mood, FREAK OF NATURE is a well-rounded effort.
