I've liked Anastacia since I first heard the track "I'm Outta Love" and instantly fell in love with it. Since then, I have liked most of the singles she has released, the funky "Paid My Dues" being my favourite. This song was the first release from her second album, "Freak of Nature" and was my reason for buying the cd in the first place.
The opening and title track "Freak of Nature" provides a funky upbeat introduction to this album - a great beat and fantastic lyrics about how she's different from all the rest combine to make an unbelievably catchy track, although the talking at the beginning of the song is a little irritating. After this, the misleadingly slow and eerie sounding introduction of "Paid My Dues" (her best tune to date, as I said before) leads us into this very r & b style track with its fantastic music and strong chorus, a story of Anastacia's struggle to get where she is now. Undoubtedly the best track on the album, in my opinion.
The album then takes a momentary nosedive with the bland mid-tempo track "Overdue Goodbye" - the tune sounds
a bit country & western and Anastacia's voice is a tad whiny and nasal on it and the overall effect of it just is not a good one. Luckily, this is redeemed by next few songs, which are all exceptionally good and in a variety of different styles. This kicks off with "You'll Never Be Alone", a rare "good" ballad, which begins really simply and builds up to an almost gospel-like chorus, really showing off the strength and uniqueness of her voice. The next song is a complete contrast to this, the bouncy hit "One Day in Your Life", reminiscent of "I'm Outta Love" and "I Was Made for Loving You" - this features upbeat and strong lyrics about recovering from a break-up, which is particularly meaningful for my own situation. I like it particularly because it is basically a message to her ex saying okay, we've broken up, but you're the one who is going to regret the decision you've made - "One day in your life, love will remind you, how could you leave it all behind?/One day in your life's gonna find you/with the tears you let me cry." I can definitely identify with this song, and I'm sure a lot of others feel the same way!
"How Come The World Won't Stop" initially didn't seem like a song I would like, but is definitely a grower, because I now really like it. It's a bit depressing, which is what put me off in the beginning, but once you listen to it a few times, you realise the tune is in fact really catchy and the poignant lyrics will get stuck in your head. This is a song full of emotion and once again it really shows off Anastacia's fabulous voice. Then we go into another change in style with the girl-power anthem "Why'd You Lie To Me" - similar in style to "Paid My Dues" but even more r & b and funky in style. Both the verses and chorus of this are very strong and extremely infectious, and the song is built around a great thumping hook which makes the song even catchier and makes you even more inclined to sing along, whether you know the words or not.
Then unfortunately the greatness is almost over. Out of the final four full tracks on the album, only one "Don't Stop (Doin' It)", another upbeat "vintage Anastacia" track, is worth a listen. There are two remaining ballads, "Secrets", which is a bit boring apart from the underlying drum programming, unusually placed in such a slow song; and the insipid "I Dreamed You", piano led with sickeningly sweet lyrics. The biggest disappointment of all, however, is "Don't Cha Wanna", which features a Stevie Wonder sample and SHOULD be good, but never really gets off the ground in my opinion, the music far better than the singing or the lyrics.
I think Anastacia has one of those voices which you either love or hate, but you can't dispute she has an impressive set of . . . lungs on her. Her voice sounds great on nearly every track, with the exception of "Overdue Goodbye" and her vocal range is fantastic. The album is very distinctively "Anastacia" and you can't really imagine anyone else being able to do the songs justice.
But it's hard to know what to recommend in terms of this album. SHOULD you buy it, when nearly half of the songs aren't really up to much? Well, my personal opinion has always been that if you like three or more single releases FROM an album and like them enough to want to OWN them, it is actually better value to purchase the cd, rather than the individual singles. Also, the good half of the album is EXTREMELY good, and covers a range of different types of music, so you're sure to find something that suits you, but there are no real surprises in it.
I would have to say that unless you, like me, liked the majority of single releases from this particular album, or are a diehard Anastacia fan, don't bother buying "Freak of Nature". Instead, simply steal it off one of your friends when they aren't looking and have a listen. If you like it, you can always record it. Not that I'm condoning that, of course!
"Freak of Nature" costs £7.99 from amazon, £6.99 from cd wow, or £9.99 from play.

Sounds like you fell for Anastacia the same way I did, with "I'm Outta Love". I've got the Special Edition of this album, which has another 7 tracks on a second CD, so it's a bit better value, especially as I picked it up in a sale!!! Not her best album, though. Have you got the new one?

Excellent review. I'm afraid I must confess that I loathe the woman. Can't really explain why....does that make me a bad person? Ah well :o) Em x x x
