naughty by nature
Review of Nineteen Naughty Nine (Nature's Fury) [PA] - Naughty By Nature by  bernie

Advantages: very original and light
Disadvantages: we want more

...I bought this album about a year ago now, for about £7 in a closing sale. I was not dissapointed, and it is still one if the most frequently listened album in my collection. My favourite songs are O.P.P, craziest and hip hop hooray. Unlike other rap artists, naughty by nature tend to stay more light and funky, rather than swearing and shouting down the mic. They have made themselves well known due to their appearance in the tony hawk skateboarding games for the playstation. This music is chilled and completey original. bernie.... Read review

Dead Good
Review of Luke Haines Is Dead - Luke Haines by  smudge-cat

Advantages: Good overview of career so far
Disadvantages: Sacrifices quality for completeness

...sophisticates, but why would anyone want to associate with such pompous, venal characters? The B-sides for the single continue with this imagery, investigating the undercurrent of sleaze and ridiculousness manifested in the most glamorous of creations. 'Glad To Be Gone' is a fiery waltz, Haines unleashing his fury and disgust at an unnamed target, while 'Staying Power' is the perfect summation of Haines's career, hilariously written by the man himself before he's even released a song: although he may never be popular with a mass audience, his music has the grace and longevity to appeal after other bands have fizzled out (and, indeed, time appears to have shown this to be the case). New Wave, the debut album from '93, expanded on these themes, cementing their importance in Haines's career. Various songs are represented here, in alternate and single... Read review

Earthbound, with a thud
Review of Earthbound [Remastered] - King Crimson by  great_badir

Advantages: Interesting takes from a volatile line-up
Disadvantages: Poor sound quality, some inferior performances

...(their best known song, here given extra life with a frankly jaw dropping improvised middle section of thrashing guitar and sax solos) and a lengthy jam over Groon (originally a basic 4 minute jazzy instrumental, but stretched out to 15 minutes of lunacy). The remaining three songs are disappointingly lazy by comparison - a flash-free and stunted Sailor's Tale, and two inconsequential chord based jams - Peoria and the title track. Aside from a few flashes of six string genius from Fripp on the opening and closing tracks, compared with other KC releases (both from this period and others) Earthbound the album is a dull affair. Even though the whole thing is held together by Ian Wallace's frantic drumnastics and Mel Collins's awesome sax playing, Fripp and bassist Boz Burrell are barely bothered. Regardless of the quality of the actual... Read review
