Advantages: low crime rate, pleasant weather, inexpensive, English spoken almost everywhere! Disadvantages: too hot in summer, difficult to heat houses in winter, hard for foreigners to find work, old-fashioned education system
We've been living in Larnaka in Cyprus on a long-term temporary basis for over six years now. Below are ten of the questions we're asked most frequently, with answers from my experience:
? What's the weather like? ?
Most people think of Cyprus as hot and humid. If you come here between June and September, that's roughly what you'll find, with peak humidity in July, and temperatures generally between 30 and 35C. There are occasional heatwaves of 40+ but these are (thankfully!) rare.
Winter, however, is surprisingly chilly. We don't get frosts at sea-level - just as well, considering the tropical plants that grow here - but there are some nights when the temperature is down to 4 or 5C, and that can feel very cold in the mostly unheated houses. We think of winter as being from mid-to-late November until early March ...
Advantages: Informative, funny Disadvantages: Only for those with an interest
into a human nostril? If not, why does my mum tell me not to do it?" were my personal favourites. In case you were wondering, the latter was asked by a nine year old. The former presumably wasn't. Other questions are simply things you've always wondered but could never be bothered to research, such as why hair turns grey or why helium balloons deflate so quickly. There are a lot of informative answers and a good smattering of amusing answers, which answered my question of whether all scientists have had a sense of humour bypass or whether that was just my teachers.
The questions are split into nine chapters, including Food and Drink, Weird Weather and Feeling OK? The final chapter is a Best of the Rest miscellaneous collection, proving that there really is something for everyone. Most of the answers are fairly short, so this book would be ...
Advantages: Huge menu. Trendy, yet comfortable décor. Suitable for every kind of occasion. Disadvantages: Main course portions rather miserly and over-priced for what you get on your plate.
Having spotted a "two main courses for the price of one" voucher on Money Saving Expert, dining at Ask was a no-brainer when we planned to celebrate my birthday recently. I'd never before dined at any Ask outlet, so I was very keen to give them a whirl, and the discount voucher certainly helped tip the balance.
For those of you unfamiliar with the group, Ask are a chain of Italian restaurants. Their emphasis is on informal dining in contemporary, yet trendy looking surroundings. The group has 115 different city centre outlets dotted throughout the UK, a large percentage of which are located in listed buildings or places of local interest. For example, the restaurant in Chichester (where we dined) is located in a large white Georgian looking building. Ask restaurants tend to be located in heart of city centres, thus making them ...

Album Reviews
Q (3/01, p.113) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Folk-tinged chillout tunes....given Tram's spectacularly glum disposition..." Muzik (3/01, p.60) - 4 out of 5 - "...A delicate lo-fi delight best savoured post midnight after far too much imbibing..." Mojo (3/01, p.104) - "...Building on the strengths of their debut....sparse, but augmented with flourishes of violin, trumpet and cello....The sound of a heart breaking quietly." Magnet (4-5/01, p.90) - "...Navel-gazing tunes that range from slow to, well, slightly slower. In a fragile, sexless voice, Anderson recites glum lyrics devoid of imagery or revelation....veering close to 70s soft rock..." NME (2/10/01, p.32) - 7 out of 10 - "...Bathes in languid melancholy throughout....Sombre and seductive, you'll want to take this lying down."
