I first heard this album about 7 or 8 years ago, a fair way past its time. For those who are unfamiliar with the band, the are 1980s punk group from the Bay Area in USA, this album being their first release.
The standout track is Holiday in Cambodia, the penultimate song, a deep dark bassline punctuating a satirical rant on Pol Pot's Cambodian dictatorship of the 1970s. A cult classic and a personal favourite which says all you need to know about DK in one single song.
The album pokes fun at a lot of the 80s American political attitudes and campaigns. From a Nazi-esque portrayal of an American governor in 'California Uber Alles' to the anticapitalist sentiments echoed in the opening track 'Kill the Poor.'
many of the tracks are fairly short so if you take a dislike to one of them, don't worry the next one will be along soon. However, this does mean the album is only about 35minutes long.
Fresh Fruit is topped off with a rousing surf-rock cover of Elvis's Viva Las Vegas which should please many different ages and tastes.
The album sounds fairly raw and in places dated but there are various versions, some of which are remastered. Nothing which is surprising from a 25 year old album though.
This album is a shining star that has survived the musical holocaust that was the 80s :)
