There's an awful lot of Elvis Presley CD's in the racks to tempt new listeners. In fact there's a lot of awful Elvis Presley CD's in those racks, too. But hidden amongst those dreadful movie soundtracks and uninspired live shows from Vegas, there are some truly great albums, of which this is one of the best.
Recorded in 1969, this is Presley returning to form after a considerable career slump in recent years. The best-known track here is probably the hit single 'In The Ghetto', a truly moving 'protest song' of sorts, with Elvis delivering a tremendously impassioned vocal. 'Long Black Limousine' is another poigniant parable, about someone who dreams of one day travelling in such a stylish mode of transportation, only to have their wishes fulfilled when they are driven to their final resting place !
'Wearing That Loved On Look', 'Only The Strong Survive' and 'Power Of My Love' display a new, funkier Elvis, thanks to the superb production of Chips Moman, who had previously worked with such luminaries as Aretha Franklin, and The Box-Tops, whose interpretation of Hank Snow's 'I'm Movin'On' is closely matched by Elvis's on this album.
Presley even turns the rather twee 'Gentle On My Mind' (best-known via a Dean Martin hit version) into something special. In fact, there's not a duff song on here, from Johnny Tillotson's 'It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin', to Burt Bacharach's 'Any Day Now'.
So the next time you're wading through the racks of your local megastore (under 'P' for Presley), bear this album in mind.
