Britney Spears, is a freak.

We all want to be, Britney Spears.

She is the perfect being, the single most clear example of the American Dream in action, she is young, fun, sexy yet with the purity of a virgin. Man, woman, child – all of us secretly wish we were her. Britney, and I don’t say this lightly, may well be God.

Now before you all presume I’m being sarcastic, give me a chance to explain. Britney is the fascinating pop star around. I take an interest, not in her music (which might as well go ‘blah blah blah blah, blah blah blah blahhh’), but in her amazingly powerful image. She epitomises everything we in Western society most desire.

Think about it. She’s perfect. A young girl, plucked from obscurity and moulded into the faultless image we all now enjoy. She appeals to everyone, everywhere, on at least one level. It’s not so much her I admire, but the people behind her. Those who have created an all smiling, all singing cash-machine, that will line their pockets into retirement. Let’s look at all the people in the world who can love Britney:

Little/Teenage Girls – Britney, at present, is possibly the strongest female character young women are likely to meet. Her songs and videos enforce the ‘girl power’ message, that was first acknowledged (not ‘invented’, like some claim, simple said out-loud), if in a rather clumsy manner, by the ‘Spice Girls’, only with a touch more class (and a truck-load more discretion). One video shows Britney leading a host of peers through their school hall-ways, as if she were the pied-piper himself, while another shows her dominating a love-struck astronaut somewhere on Mars. Her lyrics promote female equality, or even, as some may suggest, female superiority, and are a far cry from the wife-beating rants of equally popular artists such as Eminem. It is not only her music young girls feel attracted to – her looks appeal too. Wrong (or truthful) as it may be, Britney tells us that to be popular and successful we must be slim and pretty, just like the cat-walk models before her. Plain-faced fat girls can take refuge in Britneys perfection, and allow them to dream, if only for a second, of having confidence and self-esteem. Britney looks and sounds exactly how teenage girls would like to look and sound, as well as attracting attention from the opposite sex.

Teenage Boys/Men – Britney, has large breasts (fake or not). She also has a perfectly tanned torso, that meets with perfectly shaped bottom and legs. She’s tanned, she’s got long hair, she’s got a innocent face that frequently displays a ‘f**k-me-now’ expression – she’s got it all. FHM, Loaded, Esquire, Front – all these men’s magazines seek photo shoots with young Britney. She’s just plain sexy. This, I suspect, is the main reason for her popularity with males. Consider her first video – dressed in a skimpy school uniform. I’m surprised her second wasn’t set in a hospital, complete with nurse’s uniforms and all. Britney, or rather her puppeteers, have found a winning formula – she can be innocent, yet sexy, and get away with it scot-free. ‘I’m still a virgin!’ she proclaims, and ‘I hate being thought of as a sex object!’. These revelations are generally found in the token-interview-to-justify-provocative-pictures section of a FHM shoot, right next to a photo of her licking her lips while lying on a sandy beach in a bikini (or something similar). Male members of Britneys endless fan club are drawn to her extraordinary sex-appeal, and who can blame them.

You see how we have two Britneys here? I think of it as ‘good’ and ‘bad’ Britney, a split personality. Good Britney will smile on TOTP and have young girls style their hair in certain ways. Bad Britney will pose in skimpy outfits for the cover of Loaded and have men ranging from 13-65 drool over her. Either way, she’s making money. Either way, we can’t help loving her.

If I were to argue in court against the media, claiming it brain-washed society and dictated our ideals, Britney would be my case-study. She must have generating millions upon millions of dollars, in merchandise, tours and interview/television appearances. It’s not because she’s talented - I’ve seen people busking on the street with more musical talent then her. I know real people, people who can sing like angels and write meaningful lyrics, not to mention produce their own music. Some people like this are sells records of their own, but not a tenth of the amount Britney sells. She can sing, albeit with help, and she can dance, but so can a lot of people – Britney is here because of the genius behind her image. The master-minds who have created her, and continue to control her. Britney Spears shows us up as the image-orientated, shallow audience we really are. She proves we care little for quality, but only for the false cravings that have been implanted into our feeble brains by the media. We love her though, right?

Britney must be a witch. We all know she’s crap, we all have it in us to question why she should even be famous, yet still be choose to reward her and her ring-masters time after time. We throw our money at her, we give her our love and admiration, and for what? She’s put a curse on us all, and it concludes all I hate about society today. No longer are our tastes dictated by individual preference and freedom of expression, it’s all up to MTV. We all love Britney Spears, none of us know why, but we all do. I think we’re dumb. Or maybe just happy. Either way, we’re all a lot stupider for it.

All of Britneys ground-breaking albums, as well as her vast range of over-priced merchandise, can be bought from any shop, anywhere, at any time.
