My main problem with Floridian fivesome New Found Glory is that while all their songs are for the most part bouncy and uplifting, they struggle to create any moments of brilliance or ingenuity whatsoever.
Even when covering such an eclectic mix of songs, from the timeless Bryan Adams ballad, 'Everything I Do', to the theme from the seminal children's flick, Never Ending Story, they somehow manage to make these vastly different songs sound very similar by sticking to a theme of electric guitars and lots of noise . If one of these New Found Glory covers was played on the radio, even the most fervent music buff would probably not recognise the original song.
For what New Found Glory generally specialise in is nasally vocals and loud guitars which detract from the lyrics somewhat.
That isn't to say that it's unpleasant listening, but for those who aren't already familiar with New Found Glory, or any of the new wave of pop-punk bands chasing the shadows of blink-182 or Green Day, this probably is not the best record to start your collection with.
It is however, an enjoyable novelty, and is true to the standard of other New Found Glory albums by providing sing-along anthems (albeit unoriginal), and an upbeat, invigorating sound which, while you may not love, you'd find it hard to hate.
For me, the stand out track on this album is the Never Ending Story theme tune, as the original was not exceptionally memorable or exciting, as a children's movie theme should be, and this cover brightens it up considerably.
NB. As this is a cover album, my ratings of lyrics etc. are kind of skewed
Advantages: New Found Glory rework old film classics Disadvantages: under produced
...some of their favorite songs from movie and try to put their own spin on things.
Any band can do covers that sound like the orginal, but to make it your own is a different story. New Found Glory do this wonderfully, they turn a bunch of soppy ballads in to pop punk tunes that you'll have stuck in your head for days.
The sound is rather unpolished, the gurtairs sound dirty and the vocals could do with a little bit of work. You just know this band ... ...Thing", "That Thing You Do" from the film with the same name and "The Glory Of Love" from The Karate Kid Part II. All of which do the orginals justice. This is a must for all NFG and pop punk fans alike. Get this before From The Screen To Your Stereo Part 2 comes out. And you might as well beacuse you can grab it for less then a fiver! ...
