This debut from London-based four-piece The Warm Jets achieved the rare musical feat of ... more
living up to the hype generated by their fantastic 1998 single, "Hurricane". Mixing elements of pure pop song writing along with post-rock lo-fi noodlings, comparisons to Pavement are obvious; but The Warm Jets still manage to carve out a unique niche all of their own. The title track, "Future Signs", is as catchy and polished as the fabulous "Hurricane", and another highlight, "Autopia", is a triumph of understated musicianship while simultaneously being as close to pop perfection as you can find. --Amber Cowan

of an olympic athlete and the kids baby monitor tuning into a strange frequency where weird noises can be heard. Graham at first refuses to believe anything is going on and scalds his kids and brother Merrill who seem to be swept along with the 'goings-on' as seemingly does the whole town but gradually he realises through the 'Signs' that something is at work, something is going to happen, something is coming !!
The thing that this film does particulary well is that it homes in on this family and this family alone thus creating a great relationship between audience and characters. Graham is a man suffering at the recent loss of his wife, killed in a road accident, we see his grief, we see his doubts and we see his broken heart. A particulary touching scene is when he is asked by his young daughter why he speaks to his late wife and her mother ...

Advantages: Gripping Read, Twists and Turns galore! Disadvantages: Nothing at all, seriously great book
Those of you who read my first review since I re-joined the site, on Chris Kuzneski?s ?The Lost Throne? will know that he is a write I was instantly taken with. So much so that I hunted down his previous two books, ?Sign of the Cross? and ?Sword of God?.
Originally, I began reading ?Sign of the Cross? when I worked at John Lewis. It was after I had began reading Dan Brown?s ?Angels and Demons? which soon disappeared while I was half way through, gutted, I searched the shelves for something new to read, and I saw this book, the cover bent from someone carelessly reading it, the embossed lettering on the front, with the subtitle ?No Secret will Keep for ever?, well now, I was intrigued, and turned the book over to see what the blurb said..
?A Vatican priest is found murdered on the shores of Denmark?..? well, I was taken, I took ...
Advantages: Very absorbing, suspenseful, Good performances Disadvantages: The ending (somewhat anti-climactic and the visuals of the aliens), a bit too 'Hollywood' perhaps
- Introduction -
I spotted that this was going to be shown on TV yesterday and having seen other movies by the director (M. Night Shyamalan) but not this one yet (just never got around to watching it), I knew I wanted to make the effort to see it. I've always been pretty keen on his works and I knew roughly what to expect. I'm not sure that I'd say it was his best movie but I did enjoy it enough to be able to recommend it.

Rolling Stone (8/6/98, p.72) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...seems at first listen to be the legacy of mid-to-late-Eighties British brooders like the Smiths....But while Morrissey has always kept his misery urban and working class...Louis Jones...speaks from the desolate reaches of outer space..."
