Firstly I have to say, I'm a huge Jimmy Eat Worl fan. I absolutely love them, but unfortunately have never had the chance to see them live, such a bummer!!
This is a fantastic CD and has a real range of songs which will suit every mood!!
The songs are: 1. Futures 2. Just Tonight... 3. Work 4. Kill 5. The World You Love 6. Pain 7. Drugs or Me 8. Polaris 9. Nothingwrong 10. Night Drive 11. 23 12. Shame (Bonus Track) 13. When I Want (Bonus Track)
The band was formed in 1993 in Arizona and consists of 4 members: singer/guitarist, drummer, guitarist, bassist.
Jimmy Eat World started work on this record in 2004 after their lengthly Bleed American tour. Their fifth album was realeased later that year, with the lead single 'Pain' (my personal favourite on the CD) finding immediate success on the radio. The majority of the record tends to lean more towards pop/rock ballads in comparison to their more upbeat earlier work, however a few of the tracks are still reminiscent of their earlire work.
1. Futures. The track of the same name as the album is a good opener for the record. It is pretty up tembo and starts straight away with Jim Adkins' (lead singer) amazing vocals. The harmonies are fantastic and the slightly slower sung chorus has anb amnazing feel to it and good contrast with the rest of the song.
2. Just tonight... Another slightly more upbeat track, yet slightly less ctahcy than the previous one. The lyrics to the chorus are catchy and I often find myself humming the tune!! I love the lead in to the verses after the chorus when the background music quietens down and Jim's voice is predominate.
3.Work The first of the ballads on the record, and another catchy tune. Jim's voals really shine in this track and the melody is really nice. This is a really nice track to listen to and I like the backing vocals after the chorus.
4. Kill Another ballad, to start with it is a lot less heavier than any of the previous songs on the record and overall sounds a lot quieter. After about 40 seconds it picks up a bit and sounds much more textured with a heavier drum beat. It then quietens back down for the verse once more and then back up again for the chorus.
5. The World You Love Not a ballad, but not exacly up-tempo at the start of this track. The vocals are less prominant until after about one minutre after the drums have picked up with more guitar. The song seems to gain momentum throughout and builds up nicely throughout.
6. Pain An excellent choice of lead single as it really is a great track. Definitely my favourite from the album with an amazing chorus and good melody. Jim's voice deefinietly sounds best when he sings in a slightly higher pitch The joinging music between the chorus and the verse is fantastic and is really effective when it builds halfway through the verse and then when the drums suddenly come in much heavier at the chorus.
7. Drugs or Me A much much slower track, but does not lose any of the excitement of the other songs on the record. The song is fantastic yet in such a different way. The vocals are almost haunting with the simple piano in the background. A great track to relax to or listen to when you're feeling a bit down (although it definietly won't cheer you up, it really helps to relax you!).
8. Polaris Another slow one, with quite a long intro. Not as good as Drugs or Me, and one of my least favourite tracks of the album.
9. Nothingwrong This song starts much heavier than any of the others with fantastic drum beats and guitar riffs. The backing vocals add perfectly to the lead vocals and I find this is another chorus which gets stuck in my head. My second favourite track of the album I think.
10. Night drive Back to a slow one. The vocals at the start again feel quite haunting and are very relaxed. The whole song seems relaxed and doesn't rush at all.
11. 23 The final track of the normal lbum and another ballad. A long intro with lovely string sounds. Guitar riffs are nice, but I don't think this is the best choice for a final track, as I prefer the last track to be something to go out with a bang on!!
12. Shame (Bonus Track). This track is on the UK Special Edition CD and is not particularly amazing. The vocals seems to drag a bit and sound a bit annoying to be honest. I hink a better choice could have been made as to a bonus track.
13. When I Want (Bonus Track) As opposed to the previous track, this is a very nice one ot have as a bonus and would definietly make me buy the special edition as opposed to the normal version. Nice lyrics and the song is relaxed again, and sounds light all the way through with not much texture and emphasis on the vocal.s
Overall a fantastic CD (although I think I prefer Bleed Amercian as I prefer the bands more upbeat songs). The CD looks attractive with a dark front cover, but cool looking CD itself.
Album Notes: This UK tour edition includes two bonus tracks, and a bonus CD of demos. After firmly establishing itself in the hearts and minds of rock fans through numerous EPs and two albums of angst-fueled power-pop, Jimmy Eat World scored a big hit single with "The Middle," from the excellent BLEED AMERICAN (re-christened JIMMY EAT WORLD in the wake of 9/11). This third full-length record didn't offer anything substantially different than prior releases, but the mainstream had finally caught up with Jimmy Eat World. FUTURES, the ensemble's first album following its breakthrough, doesn't stray from the formula that has worked so well for the Arizona band. Jim Adkins's vocals are quietly insistent, and, at times, fiery, conveying reflective, intelligent lyrics that complement intricate melodies. Like its immediate predecessor, FUTURES opens with a politically minded title track ("I hope for better in November"), but, in general, the songs mostly revolve around love and longing. "Work" and "Pain" are filled with heart-on-the-sleeve emotions, and Jimmy Eat World makes these tunes work with undeniable sincerity. With many sharp, catchy songs on display, FUTURES is another outstanding record from Jimmy Eat World.
