Satriani, Eric Johnson and Steve Vai--toured as G3, a kind of super-roadshow featuring their own bands and, as in the last section of this recording, finally coming together onstage for a few numbers. One of the reasons why the whole package works so well is that Satriani's dirtyish techno-blues style, Johnson's limpid near-jazziness and Vai's pyrotechnics manage to seem poles apart yet entirely compatible at the same time, both as individual elements and as a frontline trio (although Johnson inevitably gets sidelined occasionally during the latter set). There are plenty of good tunes, although Johnson's "Manhattan", in which he switches from plectrum lead to gentle thumb-strums seemingly in mid-bar is outstanding, as is the trio'stour-de-forcerendering of Frank Zappa's "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama", Vai of course being a Zappa band veteran. On the DVD: Extra features are thin on the ground. There's a set of scrolling biographies (which don't understand the remote's "scan" command, so they go--by--very--slowly) but nothing else to speak of. In the end the playing is the thing on any outing like this, so just enjoy it.--Roger Thomas

Album Notes: Full performer name: Joe Satriani/Eric Johnson/Steve Vai. Personnel: Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai (vocals, guitar); Mike Keneally (guitar, sitar, keyboards, percussion); Steven Barber (keyboards); Stuart Hamm, Roscoe Beck, Philip Bynoe (bass); Jeff Campitelli, Brannen Temple, Mike Mangini (drums). Engineers include: Kooster McAllister, Skip Kent, Paul Special. Recorded live at The Memorial Auditorium, Columbus, Ohio; The Palace Of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, Michigan; Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, Illinois; and The Northrop Auditorium, Minneapolis, Minnesota between October 30 and November 2, 1996. "Summer Song" and "For The Love Of God" were nominated for 1998 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. G3 LIVE IN CONCERT matches six-time Grammy Award nominee Joe Satriani with three-time Grammy nominee Steve Vai, and Grammy winner Eric Johnson. The CD documents the group's 1996 North American tour, and features three tracks apiece by each of the guitarists as well as three no-holds-barred jams featuring all three axe-men. G3 LIVE IN CONCERT is sure to please all lovers of guitar wizardry. This high-energy CD showcases the eclectic compositional skills of the three men, with tracks featuring everything from pumped-up fusion grooves to funk-infused rhythms and jazz-flavored numbers. Each tune, though, is really a vehicle for the soaring guitar pyrotechnics for which Vai, Satriana and Johnson are famous.
Advantages: Brilliant. Fun. Evocative. A celebration of age and life. Disadvantages: None. That is, unless you don't appreciate brilliant acoustic folk music. Rap fans forget it...
...It's a rare thing when you can go home again... The Seekers are a too often underrecognised force in pop music. Supremely talented and driven by the transcendent voice of Judith Durham, they miraculously reunite after 25 years and, get this, are better than ever. Age and perspective brings a subtle maturity and irony to their voices and presentation. Each is gifted in his/her own right and together they create a unique and yes, magical chemistry that defies time and trends. The songs are performed with a passionate affection and respect for the original arrangements and memories. As a special treat, check out their studio album from the late 90s, "Future Road." Sublime in my humble opinion. A welcome relief of harmony, melody and acoustic layers from the synthesized, shallow garbage that pervades pop culture today....

Advantages: Generally good concert, 'Old Medley' is great. Disadvantages: Bonus features could be better. Needs less pop and more prog!
...manually select every question from a big list. There's also a 'Live Commentary Track' where you can hear the band's reactions on watching the DVD through - to be honest, it's pretty pointless - nothing particularly interesting is said, there's a lot of silence, occasional phones going off - you're betting off just watching the concert and enjoying the music!
Overall, like I say, this is a pretty good concert. Highlights for me include some interesting versions of the 'Musical Box' and 'The Lamb', and 'Firth Of Fifth' is always pretty awesome to see. The other songs are good, well played, but I'd possibly advise people to go for the latest 'When In Rome' DVD instead - it's got exactly the same member lineup, but with better quality visuals, and a set list which includes epics such as a 'In The Cage' and 'Cinema Show', as well as better bonus...

Advantages: Well acted, keeps you engaged throughout Disadvantages: None
...LivingIn Oblivion is a low budget independent film written and directed by Tom DiCillo and starring Steve Buscemi and Dermot Mulroney.
Sure, these aren't A-list stars, but that lends itself to the story. If it was a film about the making of a film and you had George Clooney and Brad Pitt pretending to be small time actors you wouldn't believe it. That's why it was better to use less well known actors, it pulls you more into the story.
The film takes place during one day on set of a low budget movie, and documents all the problems that the director, Nick (Buscemi), and everyone else can encounter, from equipment malfunctioning to office politics to actors forgetting their lines. It's almost like a documentary, it is very realistic and gives you the complete story as to what it's like trying to get a film made.
There are a few...
