Advantages: quite nippy 115bhp engine. looks great. cheap to obtain. Disadvantages: repairs can be pricy, problems with coolant system
of shopping around for insurance on a car like this.I was amazed at the range of prices quoted! (one company quoted nearly £1500 fully comp!!?)
Think it was either confused.com, or moneysupermarket.co.uk that came up with the lowest in the end. And I highly recommend keepin it in a driveway if you can, or in a garage if you have one.
LOOKS
This really is a smart looking car for being so little above the average family hatchback. And there are only two discreet GTi badges that give it away that it is actually a GTi. So it's not a look at me, I own a great car sort of ride, but it whispers style and has the performance to back it up.
PERFORMANCE
Developing 115bhp (in nearly new condition, but maybe only 105-110 in any of the slightly higher mileage ones.)

Awesome-GTI (http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/) is one of those rare companies where the clue is in their name. Yes, they are in fact awesome and yes, they do sell stuff for GTI?s (and TDI?s for that matter). As anyone that has read my previous reviews will know, I am a total petrol head. I got into modding my VW Golf (MK4 TDI) via being a member of an owners club and seeing what you could do to improve your car over the manufacturers standard. ive had my 106gti for around 2 and a half years now and found it to be a good overall car. Its 10 years old now and had its problemns around 72k but now ok. Ive not over done it or chavved it, i have though added :
a stainless steel system complete
CDA induction kit
Superchip
Polished and ported head
Polished cams (cat708)
strut brace
power boost valve
morettes and smoked rear lenses
lowered 45mm
clifford alarm
and it looks nice in the original gti colour which is the gold. Ive found the ones to mostly stand out are the black ones and the gold ones, the silver ones are quite often confused with the 1.6 8v version the quicksilver. id suggest this car for cheap frills as the car is fun to drive and ok on the petrol. probably no point owning a bigger car these days with the petrol costs. so this is a good little car ...
