Advantages: Best hip hop song out - no swearing Disadvantages: none
Coolio has now been around for years and maybe this review is a little late for the sound that I am talking about, but there is no substitute for Gangsta Paradise when it comes to classic hip hop music.
I listen to a wide range of music, the majority of it being rap and hip hop but this song is by far my favorite. It has a bigger appeal than most rap songs as well due to the fact that there is no swearing in the song, which in itself is unusual ... ...a lot today and it is a favorite on my media player because the tune and words are simply brilliant.
Nearly all of the words in the song make perfect sense and reflect life in deprived areas where people get beaten up and mugged just for walking down the steet. The song begs the answer to the question why does it happen? "Tell me why are we so bling to see, that the ones we hurt are you and me" is the brilliant line from the song that makes you ...

5. Finally Found - Honeyz (was #4, 1998)
Initially I didn't recognise the name of the tune or the band but as soon as I heard it I remembered it right away, it was a nice soul song that bands like SWV and En Vogue were well known for. Sadly The Honeyz also failed to follow up on the success of this track.
6. Underwater Love - Smoke City (was #4, 1997)
I think this one was an advert as well but also partially based on the James Bond theme too (go on, you mean you never noticed those are the chords to the 007 theme?), it is very tripped out and so laid back its horizontal. It reminds me a bit of "Manchild" by Neneh Cherry.
7. Gangsta's Paradise - Coolio & LV (was #1, 1995)
From the soundtrack of Dangerous Minds featuring Michelle Pfeiffer who also appears in the video from this track. Its hard to know what ...

" - Coolio
This is a funky Hip Hop joint from the West Coast MC Coolio,, famed for "Gangsta's Paradise" the year before this soundtrack came out. This acts as a form of motivation as the beat is uplifting and the lyrics are all about succeeding in this world, the combination makes you want to strive for better things.
**Four Stars**
3. "Space Jam" - Quad City DJ's
Here is a typical dance Hip hop track from the mid-nineties, full of energy and very exciting. This one comes from a little known Miami duo, Quad City DJ's, who didn't really get too much exposure, but blow up big with this single. The track is all about the fast-paced sport of basketball, and all the girls, money and dunk associated with it.
**Five Stars**

"Be it wrong or right...these are the geto highlites." In that one line lies the genius of Coolio (even if he can't spell "ghetto"). From this disc's first track--a short dialogue that sums up both the violent, inexorable sameness and the strange attraction of ghetto life--to the Grammy-winning title track, Coolio and his crew take an unflinching look at life on the streets of America. The music--sampled from, and made possible by, the likes of Stevie Wonder, the Evasions and Kool And The Gang--stays compelling throughout. Despite his hard-edged stance, Coolio shows a decided preference for summertime cruising grooves, the kind that make you wanna put your arm up on a hot aluminum door strip and watch the underworld go by.
Album Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (12/29/95-1/5/96, p.132) - Ranked #4 on EW's Top 10 Albums Of 1995. The Source (2/96, p.87-88) - 4 Mics (out of 5) - "...The crazy braided one brings skilled and insightful lyrics that reach and relate to all levels of the Black experience....sets standards that corny lyrics and catchy loops can't compete with....Few artists can straddle the line between commercial and underground hip-hop..." Rap Pages (12/95, p.30) - 7 (out of 10) - "...maybe because he rapped for a decade with no props, got yanked on record deals...this cool-ass homie from Compton has stayed grounded....Coolio rejoices in the only life he knows..." Spin (12/95, p.82) - 8 (out of 10) - "...Today's rappers aren't interested in sharing any knowledge with outsiders. Coolio is the great exception....the most stylistically broad mainstream rap album you'll probably hear all year. Even upon first listen, it sounds like a collection of hits..." Musician (2/96, p.94) - "...Coolio ties his music to a message that's as deep as the groove..." NME (11/4/95, p.49) - 7 (out of 10) - "...Instead of playing the role of the Uzi-toting big-shot, he adopts a more reflective view of urban life in Los Angeles....In doing so, Coolio takes a deliberate step forward from last year's light-hearted debut..." Entertainment Weekly (11/10/95, p.62) - "...the level-headed street philosopher, preaching respect for black women, fatherly responsibility, and safe sex....continuing in the great tradition of Sly Stone and Stevie Wonder....Coolio and his crew make the ghetto seem not just a place of desolation, but of hope." - Rating: B+
