quintessential trance superbrand. Ironically, though, as trance exploded into the mainstream in a flash of glitter, make-up, hair gel and spraypaint, the organisers of Gatecrasher began to pall at the more juvenile elements of their fanbase. Where the Gatecrasher sound was once characterised by straightforward, high-quality hard trance,National Anthemsfinds the brand diversifying--and, dare one say it, losing some of its keen edge. It's quickly evident from the Rabbit In The Moon mix of 'Crasher fave "Bullet In The Gun"--stripped of its Oakenfold production, and spaced out into sinister breakbeat territories--that a wall-to-wall trancefest isn't on the agenda; indeed, it's populist disco anthems like Spiller's "Groovejet", and the acid techno of Azzido Da Bass' "Doom's Night" that most notably rule the floor. Fortunately, in the depths of each disc, sterling remixers like Matt Darey work their magic on the likes of Moloko, so dedicated trance disciple won't findNational Anthemsa complete wash-out. Gatecrasher's fine reputation it hardly tarnished--this is still a fine mix CD. But in the competitive compilations marketplace, there is little to recommend this over the likes of say, the most recentTrance Nation. --Louis Pattison

Advantages: nice packaging Disadvantages: rotten tracks for a Gatecrasher CD
...ordinary CD… this is a Gatecrasher CD. ‘National Anthems’ is the follow up to such greats as ‘Global Sound System’ and ‘Disco-tech’ This is by far the worst album the mighty Gatecrasher have ever compiled. In terms of mix CD’s this would probably be an ok CD. But this isn’t an ordinary CD… this is a Gatecrasher CD. ‘National Anthems’ is the follow up to such greats as ‘Global Sound System’ and ‘Disco-tech’ This is by far the worst album the mighty Gatecrasher have ever compiled. It is more like something Cream would release (apart from there resident series) There is barely an unheard of track on there. It’s all popular cheese. Gatecrasher is famous for producing mixes with future tracks that no one has ever heard of yet (apart from the big DJ’s) Instead this CD is full of current tracks that have been over hyped and over played. I would never have expected to see names like ‘Darude’ or ‘Bob Sinclar’, ‘Spiller’ and ‘ATFC’ on a Gatecrasher CD. That’s the bad tracks done. Some are taken from the older Gatecrashers, which was ok then because no one had heard of them yet. But to put them on the album again is taking it too far. Tunes like ‘The Warrior’, ‘Armin- Communicaton’ and ‘Dumonde- Tomorrow’ (all good tunes in my opinion but… been there, done that). There some tunes that are just plain old and past it. For example ‘Signum- What ya got 4 me’, ‘Humate- Love stimulation’ and ‘Westbam vs Red Jerry- Wizards of the sonic’. It’s not all bad!!!! I love some tunes on it like ‘Way Out West- Ub Devoid’ and ‘Yothu Yindi- Treaty’ and the mighty ‘Sander Kleinenberg- My Lexicon’. In an attempt to redeem themselves they used more unusual remixes like the ‘Ariel’ remix of ‘Angelic’, the ‘JS16’ mix of ‘Darude’ and the ‘pants & corset’ mix of ‘Jonah’. (Look out for a bootleg called ‘Jonah vs Dr Dre & Eminem- Sst..forget about dre’…it’s quite brilliant!!) Apart from the disappointment in tune selection it’s mixed ok and if you get the limited edition packaging it’s a bonus as it is an opening hard back case (like Ministry’s Annual) So an ok CD in terms of usual mix CD’s but as I said this is a Gatecrasher CD and I would expect more from the Sheffield superclub. Their next CD better be a vast improvement!!!

Review of Gatecrasher National Anthems - Various Artists
Advantages: Great case, most songs are brill! Disadvantages: Some dissapointing - unheard of songs.
I thought half of National Anthems is very good! It says it in the title really, 'anthems' - songs people know. I thought that the first CD was really good. Theres lots of tracks on there (24 in total), so instead of many songs which 'drag on', they are all between 2 and 5 minutes. Half the songs are well known more 'commercial' songs and the other half are less known (to me). The seconds cd though was not as impressive, i hadnt heard many of the ...
