Mel C has quit, and the Spice Girls are no more – or so we are told by the gossip-hungry tabloid press. To be honest, what does it matter? Before you think this is going to be another opinion slagging them off, it is not. I am a fan and proud of it. But why is it important for them to stay together as a group? As far as I’m concerned, the Spice Girls began as five women – who each now have successful solo careers and they will be around, just in a different guise.
Let me start at the beginning – as Julie Andrews said “A very good place to start!”
In July 1996, Wannabe hit the British public, and a group of hitherto-unknown women became part of the national culture. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, five years later, they have silenced (most of) the critics and are still very much in the public eye.
When they first tasted success, their look was quite different from anything that had gone before. With five different personalities and a variety of images, there was something for every little girl to copy and every father to leer at. While primary schoolgirls were having their hair in cute bunches like Emma, the men were admiring Geri’s revealing tops or Victoria’s feline sexuality.
Soon they became known for their images and almost lost their own identity, as their nicknames took over. Mel was all hair and attitude, so became Scary Spice. Victoria was all tight Gucci dresses and designer pouts, so was called Posh Spice. Emma was all short skirts and lollipops, so was Baby Spice. The tomboy in tracksuits, with hair scraped back severely into a ponytail was Sporty. Then Geri – cleavage and well, more cleavage – was Ginger Spice – probably because Booby Spice was a bit too controversial.
Hit followed hit, swiftly disproving all the usual ‘one hit wonder’ threats – Mama, Who Do You Think You Are?, Two Become One, and many more. Soon they were smashing records and proving themselves to be the most successful British girl band ever. Well, okay, not so impressive if you think there was only Bananarama as competition, but let’s face it, the Spice Girls were something special. Were. Yes, I used the past tense, for they are no more – maybe, probably.
People cried when Take That split up, thinking they would never see the lads again. But I can’t see that happening with the Spice Girls. Besides one hit single recently, with Holler / Let Love Lead The Way, they have had many more appearances in the charts as solo artistes lately than as a group.
Geri was, of course, the first member to leave, and rumours were abounding that the group would disappear and so would she. Oh no, it didn’t happen. Geri reinvented herself, wrote her autobiography and released an excellent solo album Schizophonic, and had a string of number one hits – and rightly so. A few more months in the cold, then she reinvents herself once more and appears at the Brits with short hair, and an even shorter skirt. No doubt she will soon be back at the top of the charts too. At 28, she is definitely no has-been, looking more fit and stunning than ever before.
What about the others? Where have they been and how is their future looking, if the Spices do split? Well, let’s face it, it doesn’t look like the Job Centre for any of them, does it?
Mel B (26 in May) has a daughter, Phoenix, and a broken marriage. (Is it just me, or does Jimmy Gulzar rhyme with Wannabe Star?) Her personal problems have improved her musical efforts too, in my opinion. Her awful version of Word Up is now scattered in 99p bins of cheap supermarkets, while her recent singles have been much better. She has proved she has the talent and ability to survive without the group, as have the others. It appears she finds it more difficult to stay in her tops, than to attain solo chart success.
Victoria (26 in April) has a rather famous husband and a son named after his place of conception. (Following that logic, my four would all be called Portsmouth!) She had a very successful hit last year, teaming up with Dane Bowers and the True-Steppers for something rather unpredictable, but very flashy. Hated it at first, but it grew on me. It also taught me that garage wasn’t something you put your car in.
Emma is the youngest of the five at 23, and I think she is the least talented, but feel free to disagree. She seems very nice and all that, but I find her slightly annoying. She had a rather dull hit last year, and is set to storm the charts soon with her first proper solo effort - well, I think storm is too strong a word, but it should simper happily around the top 10. But if her singing careers dies an early death (Is there a god??), she can try her hand at TV presenting again. Her appearance on CD:UK controversially hinted at some kind of friction between her and Cat Deeley, so that could be interesting.
Mel C is, I believe, the most talented Spice girl along with the afore-mentioned Ms. Halliwell. Melanie is 23 years old and seems a tough, don’t-take-no-cr*p kind of girl. Her album is excellent, with a wonderful variety of songs. Compare the fast-moving, toe-tapping, hip-gyrating tones of I Turn To You with the dream-like and moody Never Be The Same Again, which was for me, the best single of 2000.
So, to conclude, the Spice Girls have been hugely successful – their three albums are a good example of this and also how their music has developed over the years. But they don’t need each other anymore, they are – and will be – successful, alone or together. It seems strange that the epitome of pop can produce individuals who relish all these different styles of music, but I am pleased to hear their range of styles and to enjoy each solo effort for what it is.
The Spice Girls’ days as a group are surely numbered, but don’t shed a tear. They are here to stay. Goodbye, Spice Girls! Viva Forever – Geri, Mel B, Mel C, Emma and Victoria!
Advantages: THEY ARE FAB Disadvantages: THEY ARE SO UNDERATED
Since the Spice Girls fist burst on to the scene in July 1996 they have sent shockwaves throughout the music world and indeed the world! No other band since the Beetles have caused such a sensation, they have changed the face of pop music and the way that girl groups are seen forever.
The Spice Girls were so fresh, so talented and so likeable, everyone knew who they were, everyone could sing along to their music and everyone had an answer to the ... ...The magazine ‘Top Of The Pops’ gave each of the Spice Girls nicknames that reflected their personality and how they looked, Emma was BABY, Melanie C was SPORTY, Victoria was POSH, Melanie B was SCARY and Geri was GINGER, these nick names stuck and since then that’s what they’ve been called around the world.
The spice girls have diversified into many different things, in every one they have been successful beyond anyone’s ...

The Spice Girls first screeched onto our radio stations in 1996. The girls themselves are not a great source of music and entertainment, they simply look like children dressing themselves up as Barbie dolls. All of the spice girls are absolutely talentless and desperately need make overs. Their songs are all the same, pathetic lyrics, bad instrumental sections and cheesy music and sounds. All of their rubbish sounds the same and I wish that they ...

Review of General: Spice Girls
The Spice Girls have come to epitomise everytthing that is wrong in the music industry. They are a group of individuals selected purely on the basis of their looks rather than any talent. None of the Spice Girls play any instruments, or write lyrics (A quick look in the single "2 Become One" tells me it took 7 people to write!!) Everytime I turn on the television or the radio I am confronted with the Spice Girls or a similar group being hailed as ...

The Spice Girls have reportedly split up and in a way it marks the end of Girl Power. They often got slated for their lack of singing ability but some of their songs were good like 'Wannabe' and most young kids love them. However, it was the first girl band in my generation of note and they had a bit of attitude. They were in a way little characters with their names:
Posh Spice, Baby spice, Ginger Spice, Scary Spice and Sporty. I think you can tell ... ...and Ginger Spice will do well in their solo careers, Posh Spice won't sell any records but do just as well with modelling and I see a career in presenting for Baby Spice and as for scary spice I don't know......
Last week I watched 'Raw Footage of the Spice Girls' and it was quite weird seeing them when they were so young, they were on benefit, had no money and were just skint. But, they were dedicated and went to the top. If they can't sing as ...

Advantages: Still a good laugh, if you happen to find a Sun on a bus Disadvantages: Holler/Let Love Lead The Way
What's going on with the spice girls? Granted, they've never been fantastic musicians/songwriters, but then they were never supposed to be, and if you understood that then there's never REALLY been a reason to hate them. They served but one purpose (for anyone over the age of ten): to cheer us all up with cheesy pop tunes, tabloid fodder, cartoonish images, and arguing over which one you fancied.
But just recently it's all got a bit depressing, ... ...inhabited for the past four years has caused them all to actually take themselves seriously. Mel C's been givin' it out in interviews like she's the new Johnny Rotten, and the Spice/Westlife thing - well, is anyone really bothered? It's hardly Beatles/Stones is it?
Please girls, get back to what you do best. Failing that, either shut up or split up.
If this is Goodbye ... let's hope it's Forever (sorry). ...

Advantages: Wonderful lyrics, good vibes Disadvantages: Too many slow songs
I bought this album about 2 months ago and was not at all disappointed in it. I've liked Gabrielle for a while now, although never actually bought one of her albums. The funky cool soul music is wonderful, giving out great vibes, making you feel happy with yourself and the world around you in general. Chirpy upbeat tunes on it include "When a Woman", just released of course, "Falling" (which sounds remarkably like SpiceGirls "Stop" I have to say) and of course my personal favourite, "Sunshine". Overall a brilliant comeback from a great soul diva. ...
Yes, I'm yet another one of the 100's (or should that be 10000's of people) ex-spicegirl fans who once, did remotely like them but now would rather be killed by a chicken with a spoon than listen to them.
The first album- roaring sucsess
2nd album- almost sucsess
3rd album- not worth listening to.
it is entitled Forever, but, as we all know, they will only be together for a very short time. Solo careers are beconing all. Within about a year, they will be finished.
This album didn't amke nearly as big an impact as all of the other, long awaited ones did.
As I don't liek the Spicegirls, I generally don't like the songs on it. there are a couple that are okay but there's too much solo-ism within the songs. They now no longer sound like one, justa group.
The album is from £10-£14 depending on where you buy it. It's avaliable in ...
Despite most of the people around me blaring more modern, 'hardcore' music, my passion still lies with pop music. There is something so unbelievably cheesy and exciting from the music born in the 90s. Partly I feel I adore it because the songs represent my childhood, but also because it is generally so upbeat and cheerful ? you hardly run the risk of getting depressed at all!
Over the years I have admired a lot of pop 'people', from Lolly and the SpiceGirls to Steps and of course, Billie Piper. Though in 2001, a new band was born. S Club 7 hand picked eight kids, some entering their teens, to form their 'juniors', the band then taking the name 'S Club Juniors'. Straight away they were a huge success, with its band members each with their own styles: Hannah, Aaron, Calvin, Jay, Daisy, Frankie, Rochelle, Calvin and Stacey. After ...
