The German shepherd is a bold, affectionate,loyal and trustworthy and intelligent canine companion.
I have experience from when i was just five years of age with the breed as my parents used to show and breed this breed of dog. as far as i am aware of there are two mental types of German shepherd. there are the English type and the German type.
the English type bloodlines are heavier in weight, bigger in bone and more laid back and calm where as the German type are lighter smaller in bone and very energetic and hyperactive. also the English type is more sable and black in colour and the Germans type is an almost red tan and black.
Both types i have to say are a lovely dog to own and choose as a doggy companion but the German type needs more excercise to please the energy he/she has to burn off. my parents used to breed ...

bred it was in the Alsace region of France, which at the time was part of Germany.
It also is believed that after the first and second world wars, to have the word German connected to anything was a negative, so it was dropped in favour of the name Alsatian by many people.
Brief history of the breed.
A former cavalry officer called Max von Stephanitz decided to cross breed working sheep dogs to create a working sheepdog that fulfilled his criteria in certain areas. Not least, a dog who would herd but also cover large distances at a trot.
Eventually a breed standard was drawn up, and the first breed show took place in 1899 following which the GSD became firmly established across Germany. In 1906 the first dogs were exported to the USA

Advantages: Excellent Guard dogs, loyal. Disadvantages: Can be aggresive and prone to disease.
From a very young age I have always been interested in dogs. Most of my friends had dogs but I was never allowed one. So when I was older and got married I got a dog as soon as was practical. I was at work one day when a customer told me he had German Sheppard pups for sale and did I know anyone who wanted one. I leapt at the chance and bought one for £10. Cheap? (This was twenty-five years ago).
Being young and naïve I took it home and to all intents and purposes it looked like a German shepherd. However it ended up as a cross between a Labrador and a German Shepherd. It grew quickly and then we realised it wasn?t what it was supposed to be. Anyway by now we were attached to it and we kept it. For seventeen years.
