John Legend is a talented song writer, talented musician (pianist). Apparently he has been around for sometime but this was the ground breaking album that made him known.
With singles such as Used to Love U, Ordinary People and Number One going straight to the top of the chart, as well as the Album, ' Get Lifted', John Legend is five star, from his voice to the lyrics. I AM ADDICTED TO THIS ALBUM!
This album is outstanding and one of my personal favourites, as soon as I heard it I fell in love with it. I never had to skip a track, each song was good and it was as if there was a story he was telling from one track to the other.
John Legend's music is a mixture of Jazz, Soul and R n' B, I think he is exceptionally talented and can't wait until he releases his next album. I listen to this album at least once a week and always have it with me whenever I have to take long journeys.
Even if R n' B isn't you thing I am sure you'll find that John's music appeals to everyone, but on the age scale I will say the older crowd, say 21 and above.
I have so many tracks that are my favourites but in particular, Used to Love U, Number One and Stay with you stand out for me.
1.
Prelude - Normally I skip preludes and interludes but even this is great, I keep it on repeat as it is just nice listening to his piano.
2. Get Lifted - The drums and the piano here are exceptional. It is between fast and slow. I wished this one had come out as a single because the instrumentals are brilliant.
3. Used to Love you - The first single released in the UK, this was a definite hit and very good. About material things that people seek for in a relationship. Thought provoking.
4. Alright - This is the beginning of a story as you would find out, Tracks 4 - 7, have a story line which is interesting, this track is the beginning of the affair, he has found out that some girl has been checking him out and he thinks it's 'Alright' that they start something.
5. She Don't Have To Know - This one has a lot of jazz in it, (why I particularly love it), I love this track, the story line is also very funny and nice. It is about cheating and what he has to go through to keep it secret. 'Someone's watching, got my shades on to cover up my eyes, hope nobody sees me passing by, through my disguise...', I always have this one on repeat.
6. Number One - The story goes on, here the lady has found out he was cheating and he is begging her to stay basically, she is his Number One. Kanye West features on this track and his rap is funny, it's a pity that Kanye's part was cut out when the video of this track was released as I think the rap added a lot of flavour to the song.
7. I Can Change (feat Snoop Dogg) - As I said, the album is consistent and now John is saying he will change for her. Snoop Dogg feature on this track, and although you can feel the Hip Hop vibes in this song, John mixes it very well with classic - his piano and the outcome is pretty good.
8. Ordinary People - The second single released, this one is a slow track with very well written lyrics, it will get you thinking. This track talks about majority of relationships, the ups and downs, highs and lows but at the end 'We're just oridinary people, maybe we should take things slow...', it nicely sang too.
9. Stay With You - My best song on this track, it is beautiful, the lyrics are comforting and so is John Legend's voice, I don't know why he didn't release this one as a single, if he did, it would have gone straight to number one. Talking about a relationship, 'going stronger everyday...and i will Stay with you, through the ups and the downs...when the dark clouds arrive, I will stay by your side...'
10. Let's Get Lifted Again - Very slow and soothing, John shows you the highs of his voice. This track to me is sort of an interlude, it is very instrumental with his voice backing his piano...
11. So High - I do not think this single was released in the UK but it was in the States, it is very lifting. I happened to see the video and when he sings you can tell that this guy always gives it his all and that is what makes this album so exceptional.
12. Refuge (When It's Cold Outside) - Another up lifting song, and to be honest I never get tired of them, 'Pray for better days to come, pray that I will see the sun...suddenly there's no more clouds,- when it's cold outside, no need to worry,' very calming track.
13. It Don't Have To Change (feat The Stephens Family) - One of those beautiful songs, I am sure The Stephens Family are church singers, the song has a very church feel to it and it makes you want to clap you hands and you begin to believe.
14. Live It Up (feat Miri Ben-Ari) - This song grows on you, this is my least favourite on the album but it still is really good, showing you just how go this album is.
You never get tired of this album, I listen to it so many times and never lend it to anybody as it is very valuable to me, John Legend's album is an essential in any collection.
If you simply love instruments, then you have John's lovely piano to listen to and his voice is 'wow'. If vocals are you thing, then this is very raw, original and undiluted by 'studio gismos'.
I can honestly say that this album is outstanding and I recommend you should get it if you don't already have it. It is available at Play.com for £9.99 (free delivery) or Amazon for £7.97 (but you need to pay for p & p).
This album is value for money and might even go up in value. There are no inconsistencies, every song is good and has well thought out and written lyrics. John's plays his piano flawless and even sings through it too.
As Snoop Dogg said, John Legend is Legendary __, well I can't repeat the words he said. You'll just have to get the album and find out.
