Advantages: Asher knows his stuff Disadvantages: It's all a bit too much for me
all those lovingly told battle scenes are very repetitive, despite creative usage of various highly developed weapons and they often don't contribute much to the development of the plot. The characters themselves are rather flat, and social background to the Polity worlds almost non-existent. More than half of the novel is taken up by the build-up and the real, exhilriating suspense only kicks in in the last 180 pages.
For this reader, Line War would have been a much more enjoyable read at hundred pages shorter, with significantly less detailed descriptions of exploding metal, evaporating rock and coiling wormships.
Still, those who loved previous Cormac novels (and particularly Polity Agent) should get hold of this one as it does its job well. Other s-f readers should probably borrow it, unless they really like space opera ...
Advantages: Entertaining the whole way through Disadvantages: Slightly on the budget side
Last night Behind enemy lines was on Film Four and I thought I?d give it ago, I had never heard of the film before and so did not know what to expect, I always give the info on the TV a read before getting into a new film as unfortunately I am one of the Biased people of the world who find a film more worth trying if it has good actors and a good synopsis. Judging a book by its cover and all that (slap on the wrists).
First impressions
Before the film had started I had my doubts, the cast of actors includes Owen Wilson, and after seeing more than a fair share of his films, I was doubtful to whether he could pull off what was being described on the TV info as an ?action/thriller? I have never seen him in a serious role and although this gave doubts it also intrigued me into seeing the film and made me want to see if he would fail ...
Advantages: Much of this album is excellent, superbly catchy Pop Punk expertly executed. Disadvantages: In 'Leaving' the band try too many things at once and it just doesn't work.
The Starting Line have been together now since 1999. They formed in Philadelphia and are currently signed to Virgin Records. To date they have released only three studio albums, 'Say It Like You Mean It' being their first, an album that was released through Drive-Thru Records in 2002. It is an upbeat and fun Pop Punk album, a terrific début from the band and one which helped them make a big name for themselves in the Pop Punk world. This album is slickly produced and the band really shine through with their sugar coated Pop Punk music here.
When this album was released the band had already been together for three years and their cohesion as a band is clearly apparent in their sound. The Starting Line work well as a unit and each of the bands four members do their bit in completing the truly infectious Pop Punk sound on this album ...
