Gift Of Time, The - Jean-Luc Ponty

Additional notes

Album Notes: Ponty's mid-'80s recording THE GIFT OF TIME is ultimately one of his best of the decade. He pares his backing band to a trio, and the three make do with an intimately shared merging of instruments acoustic, electric, and electronic. The extremely well produced THE GIFT OF TIME contains a number of ravishing moments.
The silken violin pluck of "Metamorphosis" and the amazing title track hark back to the glory days of ENIGMATIC OCEAN but reap far more immediate technological rewards. Ponty lays down some exquisite MIDI-violin chords, under which percussive beds gel and whorl. The atmospheres Ponty broaches with his extraordinary violin playing move subtly from melancholy to triumph to awe and back again. The band kicks out the jams in a wondrous climax. TIME is thrilling stuff from a musician who has arguably never failed to make a satisfying recording.

A Pretty Decent Gift
Review of Greatest Gift - Liberty 37 by  a-true-ben

Advantages: Emotional post-grunge rock music very competently done
Disadvantages: No one ever heard them so they disappeared after album two

...It was around 1999 that I really started getting into a much wider range of music. Prior to that I'd graduated from my parents' likes and children's music to Nirvana, silverchair, Foo Fighters, etc but it was then that I started buying magazines, going to gigs and exposing myself to a lot more alternative artists. So it was I came to hear of Liberty 37 - though when I went on a week's geography fieldtrip in Swansea that summer, I'd barely have been able to miss the masses of fly-posters anyway. A four-piece from the South Wales area, Liberty 37 consisted of Ishmael Lewis (vocals - who metal fans may have heard guesting on earthtone9's 'Yellow Fever'), Tim Batcup (guitar), Andrew Watkins (bass) and Cliff Harris (drums). The Greatest Gift was their debut album, and though it was followed by The God Machine in 2002 they have, to my... Read review

Because Of The Times - Kings Of Leon
Review of Because Of The Times - Kings Of Leon by  carl.mcqueen

Advantages: An excellent piece of music
Disadvantages: Disadvantages?!

...So, The Kings of Leon hey? From a southern American state to nearing global domination in about five years. However, for four of them years they hardly looked like 'breaking it'. Their debut full-length album "Young & Young Manhood" was an excellent first effort that seemed a bit 'different' to the majority of stuff out there. "Aha, Shake Heartbreak" was a great performance for the so-called difficult second album. But it ultimately appeared as if the Kings of Leon were destined to be a band that the majority liked but only the minority loved.... Then something happened. "Because of the Times" was released. Released on April 2, 2007 in the UK on Hand Me Down it stormed to the top of the album chart and give the band radio airplay that it only sparsely received prior to the release. The album's 13 tracks show not so much... Read review

Time to get Draconian on you.
Review of Draconian Times - Paradise Lost by  HarryKgh

Advantages: The album that founded the gothic rock genre.
Disadvantages: The last few songs on the album are not quite as good as the start.

...1995 saw the pioneering album 'Draconian Times' released by Halifax based gothic rock band Paradise Lost. Being the fifth album in the bands discography this album has a very different sound and style being taken by the band especially in the vocal department. Lead singer Nick Holmes vocals take on a more clear and concise tone in comparison to the bands previous albums such as 'Gothic' and 'Shades of God'. The album is said to be the first in the gothic rock genre and is sited among many fans as the bands best work to date. Prior to this album the band was virtually unknown outside of the usual rock charts however this all changed when they recorded a UK chart position of number 16 with this album. Album Track listing 1. Enchantment - Starting off the album with a wonderful piece of piano music suddenly we are greeted... Read review
