Stan Getz Plays Jobim is yet another CD anthologising the tenorist's work for Verve, but ... more
it is more imaginative and integrated than most of the others. The latter, for all that they abound in wonderful music, do not always satisfy the serious enthusiast: their pick 'n' mix rationale is more likely to attract dilettantes or beginners. But even aficionados who have these 14 tracks already may want to buy this, for it collects--for the first time on a single CD--an example of every Jobim song that Getz recorded. The results are doubly enriching, demonstrating afresh just how multiply gifted and wide-ranging a composer Jobim was and how his songs invariably inspired Getz to the peak of his imaginative powers no matter what the context or who else was on hand. Thus "The Girl From Ipanema" and "Eu e Voce", both featuring the decidedly limited Astrud Gilberto, emerge as hardly less riveting than "One Note Samba" with guitarist Charlie Byrd or "No More Blues" from Big Band Bossa Nova. Mention should also be made of the searingly beautiful "O Morro Nao Tem Vez" (which translates as "The Slums Have No Chance") and "So Danco Samba", whose charming Joao Gilberto vocal is offset by a tenor solo of almost alarming power. In short, this is a record for everyone, beginner and seasoned veteran alike. --Richard Palmer

Advantages: Near perfect saxophony. Disadvantages: Too smooth.
The Very Best of StanGetz. Sax Moods.
The cost of this double CD varies, I actually got mine from a boot sale for £3, it can be bought on Amazon for less than a fiver.
StanGetz, to me, on tenor sax is like Kenny G is to soprano, Mr smooth. There is no doubt that this has been both his accolade and his downfall.
Traditional jazz fans may well find him too smooth, yet his pedigree and grounding was in some of the more bebop style bands. His 'tone' when playing has been called 'the sound' as it is pretty near perfect, now personally I like something a little more 'off' perfect.
This double CD is broadly (though not completely) split into two genres. The first CD is more traditional jazz tunes and ballads whilst the 2nd CD is dominated by Latin, BossaNova type tunes, not my favourite genre (CD 2).
The thing I do like about ...
Advantages: Subliminal tone - a great tenor saxophonists Disadvantages: Played lots and lots and lots of bossa's - most by Jobim - i like his playing in other styles as well, not just bossa's!
StanGetz was one of the most famous jazz saxophonists, with his classic tenor sax tone that he generated from his mark VI horn. Many players think that StanGetz had the ultimate tone, with its depth, richness and smoothness, and many current players try to copy it.
StanGetz is probably most famous for his playing of Bossa's, mostly those written by Antonio Carlos Jobim, and he also did a lot of recordings with the vocalists Gil and Astrud Gilberto.
Perhaps Getz's two most recorded pieces are The GirlfromIpanema (Garota de Ipanema) and Corcovada (Quiet Night of Quiet Stars), with him making many recordings of both. My favourite Bossa that Getz played however, is Desafinado (Slightly out of tune), because it suits Getz's playing perfectly, suiting his smooth, rich tone.
Although Getz is most famous for his Bossa's, and many ...

Advantages: A great jazz collection Disadvantages: Stan is the only soloist
I don't know if this album received that much attention when it came out but I've been listening to it lately a lot. I'm a saxophone player, and Getz is not even usually one of my favorites. I always thought his sound was too lightweight or something. The only albums I liked were the early BossaNova ones, but not any more. He plays so soulfully on this album, it's like he's literally crying, wailing, and his sound is so beautiful and big and perfect intonation--all the more amazing since he had terminal cancer at the time of the recording. You would never know it. This is a very arranged album with lots of horns and synthesized instruments and percussion and lots of different styles and grooves, but don't let that discourage you because it's very intimate and Stan is the only soloist, blowing all the way through. Occasionally ...
