As you can see from my ratings ... ...be singing about a lonely girl who is listening to people on the other side of the wall but by the time this track ends, the lonely girl is the one in the other room who is no longer lonely.
I have to say this is a very Jazz orientated album and comparing her to Jamie Cullum is about as near as I could possibly get. For those of you that like a melody that is in tune, you will probably not like this album. It seems some times notes ... more
After I read another review of this album, I knew I had to get it. It was everything I look for in an album and I managed to find it for 4gbp at my local supermarket which I believe to be an unbelieveable buy.
Diana Krall has been around for a long time and although I had heard of her, I did not realise what an impact she would have on my taste in music. Diana is a Jazz artist and after seeing her in a live performance, everything she does is so effortless she makes singing and piano playing look ever so easy.

As you can see from my ratings of each of the tracks, they do vary in what I like but Departure Bay is the best song. The reason I found this was I read the biography and information about this album from the Diana Krall web site. The ste told me that this song was all about Diana losing her mother and that this song was about her first Christmas without her but remembering the past and how everything used to be so happy. I could feel my eyes beginning to swell up as I read this and was listing to the song at the same time.
The songs I gave a rating of (3) to, are all good tracks but not really something that gave me much emotion towards. Diana is a brilliant pianist and the solo's could be award winning. I am not a singer but do like to 'hum' the tunes if I am in a happy mood.
Temptation is the most upbeat track of the album and how some people cannot resist it. No matter how bad someone may be for you, the temptation is irresistable and will always be something you want to go for.
The title track is a very good one. I couldn't really imagine what the song was on about but really listening to the words and having them down in front of you really helps. It seems a little confusing as Diana seems to be singing about a lonely girl who is listening to people on the other side of the wall but by the time this track ends, the lonely girl is the one in the other room who is no longer lonely.
I have to say this is a very Jazz orientated album and comparing her to Jamie Cullum is about as near as I could possibly get. For those of you that like a melody that is in tune, you will probably not like this album. It seems some times notes are missed but that all adds to the feel of Jazz. I only have this Diana album and have looked into others. There are many well known tracks on other albums as dedications to arists.
Advantages: Beautiful voice, good melodies Disadvantages: Slighty down-beat
...The title track, The Girl in the Other Room written with Elvis Costello is a lovely piano melody, with Krall's voice sounding quite mysterious. Temptation is a cover of a Tom Waits song (one of my hero's) and I must say it is a decent version. Husky but sensual.
I'm Pulling Through is a stunner of a track if you're into lyrics. It is just such a touching song; if you've been through anything tough in your life the lyrics/song will take on its own ... ...it is worth the effort.

Album Notes
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Diana Krall (vocals, piano); Neil Larson (Hammond B-3 organ); Anthony Wilson (guitar); Christian McBride, John Clayton (bass); Peter Erskine, Jeff Hamilton, Terri Lynne Carrington (drums). Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California and Avatar Studios, New York, New York. U.K. version with exclusive bonus track "I'll Never Be the Same." It may or may not be significant that Diana Krall's first album of new material since the ascendance of Norah Jones is the former's least jazzy, most pop-savvy album of her career. In any case, it marks Krall's biggest departure to date; THE GIRL IN THE OTHER ROOM is almost entirely devoid of the jazz standards that constituted her previous repertoire, and it contains her first recorded batch of original songs. It's possible that new husband Elvis Costello, who co-wrote all six of those tunes with his wife, was the agent provocateur. It's also feasible that Costello, who has previously recorded Mose Allison material and palled around with Tom Waits, nudged Krall toward such choice selections as Allison's bluesy plaint "Stop This World" and Waits's cocktail rhumba "Temptation." Nevertheless, Krall delivers them--like the rest of the songs here--in a misty, laconic style very consistent with her earlier work. There's no attempt at pop-oriented production here, just the same piano-trio sound that's been Krall's stock in trade all along. Ironically, the jazziest tune here is Costello's early-1980s ballad "Almost Blue," previously performed by Chet Baker. Naturally, the new songs also bear the unmistakable stamp of Costello, but no matter how far afield her song sources (Joni Mitchell and Chris Smither's catalogs are drawn on as well), Krall maintains the trademark feel that made her famous.
