Released in April 2004, this album is quite old - however, at the moment, it is constantly on my stereo. If you're interested and lucky, you should be able to get this album for less than a tenner . This is Diana's seventh studio album.
The album is interspersed with some of Diana's own creations (written with her husband Elvis Costello) and some covers. Overall the sound is one of jazz, and the melodies beautiful. It's not an incredibly upbeat album in terms of the tunes, but there are a few songs that pack a punch, e.g. Stop this World is a robust opener that may stop you in your tracks (this is a cover of a song by Mose Allison)!
The title track, The Girl in the Other Room written with Elvis Costello is a lovely piano melody, with Krall's voice sounding quite mysterious. Temptation is a cover of a Tom Waits song (one of my hero's) and I must say it is a decent version. Husky but sensual.
I'm Pulling Through is a stunner of a track if you're into lyrics. It is just such a touching song; if you've been through anything tough in your life the lyrics/song will take on its own meaning for you. Although not rare in songwriting, it's always nice to stumble upon such personable music.
Love Me Like a Man, I've Changed My Address and Masquerade give the album a much needed lift. Although far from jolly in terms of lyrics, the musical composition of these songs does give the album a boost.
Narrow Daylight has to be my all time favourite on the album. It's subtle, astute, hopeful and beautiful. You can almost picture yourself as the character in this song.
Overall this is a good album, though I wouldn't say it was supberb. There are some stunning tracks on it, Narrow Daylight being one, which stop you in your tracks, but the overall feel of the album isn't one of 'happy jazz.' It's quite hard work actually, but if you get into it, then you'll find that it is worth the effort.
