keeping with the solo-spice ethic of not making a CD which sounds like your band mates. It is pop but not as you would expect. For the most part it's an easy listening jangley guitar sound with the odd experiment here and there. "World Without You" is reminiscent of the Spice Girls "2 Become 1" whereas "Been There Done That" and "She Was a Friend" sound like they could have been used in theForeversessions. There are two cover versions; Edie Brickell's "What I Am" which did the rounds in 1999 and a re-working of Zoe's "Sunshine on a Rainy Day", produced in a similar style to that of Madonna ("Don't Tell Me"). A standout track aside from the first single ("What Took You So Long?") is "Better Be Careful", contemporary northern soul which could be described asSpiceWorld's"Stop" being covered by Texas.A Girl Like Meis a great debut album with a mature sound which could mark the end of Baby Spice and the arrival of Emma Bunton. --Georgina Collins

A Girl like Her “Emma Bunton” the Best solo spice album yet!!
Emma is the four successful spice girl to date having hit number one with her single ‘What Took You So Long’. Now the Spice Girls have taken over the Beatles in the battle of the solo number ones. When the Beatles went solo only three of them went to number one. But the Spice Girls have defeated them with Melanie B’s – I Want You Back featuring Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliott. Geri Halliwell’s – Mi Chico Latino, Lift Me Up, Bag It Up & It’s Raining Men and Melanie C’s – Never Be The Same Again featuring Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes & I Turn To You.
Now the race is on to see which solo effort is to become the biggest. Here’s a track listing of Emma’s album ‘A Girl Like Me’ which has hit the highest chart entry at number four. There’s also a little hint about the each song.
1) – WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG – As everyone knows her first number one. A very deep guitar track which held the top chart position for two weeks, holding off Shaggy’s massive hit It Wasn’t Me. She also looks absolutely stunning in the video. What else can I say about this song? Apart from the fact that it is sheer brilliance. One of the catchiest summer track this year! 9/10
“What took you so long?, What took you all night?, What took you forever to see I’m right?, You know I’ll treat you so good, I’ll make you feel fine, You know I’ll never give it up this time”.
2) – TAKE MY BREATH AWAY – Probably her next single, which also exceeds the sheer brilliance of What Took You So Long. As she states the song is to her baby love Jade, he takes her breath away and he always will. A very strong pop song with some deep guitar influences, pure Emma. 10/10
“Every waking day you take my breath away, With every word you say you take my breath away, You look at me that way, baby come what may, I hope that you'll always know how to take my breath away, How to take my breath away”.
3) – A WORLD WITHOUT YOU – The albums ‘2 Become 1’ which would make a perfect Christmas number one, with her very smooth and light voice. It’s all about how the world wouldn’t be the same without your friends and family. Although every song on the album has their strengths more than their weaknesses this track seems to have more weaknesses than any other, even though it’s a really easy listening song scouring 7.5/10.
“Everything that I touch turns to blue, When I'm living in a world without you, I'm going crazy baby, I am missing you, Can't imagine all I go through, When I'm living in a world without you, I'm not alone I know that you can feel it too”.
4) – HIGH ON LOVE – This track is dedicated to her mother, which Emma wrote for her. It’s about how she’s high on love for her family and friends. In this song she has strong vocals and it’s really upbeat which is another pure Emma! 8/10
“You're making me high, high, high, high on love, You're making me high, high, high, high on love, You're making me high, high, high, high on love, You're making me high, Well I know that you're with me when I'm sleeping, And I know that you hear me when I'm speaking, No I'm, not gonna fight it, and I, just can't deny it, Cos I know that it's something I believe in”.
5) – A GIRL LIKE ME – The albums title and the best song on the album. It’s a dance track for sure and is so catchy you can’t stop singing it. Hopefully she’ll release this track and I’m sure it’ll hit number one. Her voice is fantastic and it really suits the song. It is a very different side to Emma and shows her diversity is tunes as everyone thinks she’s a pop person. The song has a swear word in it which is blanked out buy a very loud trumpet which leaves you hesitated as to what the word is. Very clever and a sure hit 10/10
“What you get is what you see, Let me tell you basically, This is how it's gotta be, Can't *!!* with a girl like me, Can't change my destiny, So if you wanna get next to me, Gotta treat me faithfully, Can't *!!* with a girl like me”.
6) – SPELL IT O.U.T. – This song is about how a relationship has come to an end and one of the partners won’t let go. A brilliant song with R ‘n’ B influences but still very original and very different again. Emma’s album seems to be getting better towards the end and her voice is on a high and I love this song. 10/10
“If I spell it O U T, Will you get the message finally, I don't wanna fight you see, But it's the end for you and me, Sorry that it had to be, But that's the reality, Do I have to spell it O U T for you to see.”
7) – SUNSHINE ON A RAINY DAY – A cover version but much more upbeat and It suits her voice to a ‘T’, and what else can I say? You listen and let me know what you think! (by leaving messages) 9/10
“Make it feel, make it feel, So Unreal (so unreal), Like a wind in the desert, Like a moon on the sea, yeah!, Sunshine on a rainy day (sunshine), Makes my soul, makes my soul drip, drip, drip away, Sunshine on a rainy day (sunshine)”.
8) – BEEN THERE, DONE THAT – What an excellent time in the album to change the poppy style songs putting a bit of R ‘n’ B and Latin influences in. It’s about how she’s been in a relationship and has already done the ups and downs and doesn’t want to do it again. A really good track and also a possible song to be released. 9/10
“Cos I've been there (been there), Done that (done that), I don't wanna get hurt again, matter of fact, I refuse to (refuse to), Go back (go back), To half-hearted promises, simple as that”.
9) – BETTER BE CAREFUL - Back to the strong guitar sound which the track also starts off like Westlifes Uptown Girl but is just as good. Very powerful voice and the song is about how she’s being careful not to get into a relationship too soon. Emma’s voice is top form as it is all throughout the album. 8/10
“Cos I see you looking over at me, And I know you really like what you see, yeah, yeah, yeah, You better be careful, You better beware, Cos I'm on the lookout baby, And I will be there, Something in your eyes, yeah, yeah, Something in your eyes”. 10) – WE’RE NOT GONNA SLEEP TONIGHT – One major Latin sound which really suits Emma and she could easily move to the Jennifer Lopez/Ricky Martin standards. With the help of a voice changer the track is very catchy and it gets stuck in your head. 9/10
“Dancing on the town tonight, Nothing can stop us, You can see it in her eyes, That we're not gonna sleep tonight, We're gonna get down tonight, See if we can make you blush, We can be mysterious, And we're not gonna sleep tonight”.
11) – SHE WAS A FRIEND OF MINE – A really R’n’B track but still has a slight pop sound. Emma has taken R’n’B and pop to another level, it’s about how she thought that she had a friend but she was only making friends with her to move in on her man. 9/10
“She was a friend of mine, Or so I thought at the time, How could I be so blind to trust her with my man, She fooled me with her eyes, And hid behind a disguise, I've read between the lines and now I understand”.
12) – WHAT I AM (with TIN TIN OUT) – Emma’s first crack at her solo career which took her to number two in the charts, after a massive battle with ex-spice girl Geri Halliwell. It was the biggest battle between two songs ever, and sadly for Emma Geri won. But what and excellent way to end the album with this song as everyone knows it and it has a changed ending which makes the son ten times better. As you should already know her voice is perfect. 10/10
“Choke me in the shallow waters, Before I get too deep, What I am is what I am, Are you what you are or what?, What I am is what I am, Are you what you are or”.
Overall a brilliant album with all excellent quality tracks which was a surprise from Emma. The album A Girl Like Me is out now
Feel free to leave any messages, I know my op is very, very long but hey it’s for Emma!!
Advantages: An album of mature, catchy, memorable pop songs Disadvantages: are 2 cover versions really necessary?
...make the transition from Spice Girl to a successful solo artist. But with ‘A Girl Like Me’, her first album away from the group which propelled her into a global superstar, she looks to have hit
the jackpot once again.
To launch her solo career, Emma has enlisted the help of Richard Stannard & Julian Gallagher (Melanie C, Spice Girls, Kylie Minogue), Evan Rogers & Carl Sturken (Eternal, Jessica Simpson), Andrew Frampton (Steps - but ... ...guitar pop or R&B, “A Girl Like Me” is a disco-influenced song about how you can’t *!!* (as the lyric sheet puts it!) with a girl like Emma! One of the strongest contenders for a future single, you may have seen Emma performing this song on The National Lottery Stars recently on UK television.
“Spell It O.U.T.” is a bit of a filler. Produced by Andrew Frampton, it is R&B by numbers. The lyrics are particularly weak. ...

Advantages: Lovely voice, good mix of tracks Disadvantages: Nothing too exciting
But then I'm a great tea drinker......
I bought this CD a few months ago because I'm usually into rougher music with an edge like Garbage and the Stereophonics but I have had a particular little fetish for Emma Bunton since 'What I am' came out ages ago with TinTinOut. She's got a lovely relaxing voice that I have always dreamed of having and I love listening to her.
This album does not disappoint me in any way. Those looking for a piece of musical ... ...she is, is not the next star of the century. Her latest singles like 'What took you so long' and 'Take my breath away' are beautiful, well put together tracks that are perfect for lying on the sofa with a cup of tea. There are a few more upbeat, dancey tracks but dear old Emma knows to stick to what shes good at and the album is mainly full of nice ballads. Her version of 'Sunshine on a rainy day' is a good one to watch out for I think as her voice ...

Advantages: Both singles are included along with many more hits! Disadvantages: There are only 12 tracks!
...now becomes the 4th Spice Girl (Including Geri) to release her debut album, and this comes on top of her #1 single "What Took You So Long?". Only Victoria is yet to have a #1 single or release her solo album.
Emma has a lot to live up to, what with Geri's success (now 4 #1 singles), Mel C has had great sucess in the album charts and 2 #1 singles. Mel B hasn't done so well, her album didn't sell well though she has had some success in the singles ... ...the dancable title track "A Girl Like Me".
Overall the album is pretty good, better in my opinion than Mel B's effort and Mel C's, and on a par of poppiness with Geri's.
I think Emma will have good success with this album, as she has one of the nicest voices of the Spice Girls, and has good material to back it up.
If you are a Spice Girls fan then you probably have this already, but if you are pondering on whether to buy it or not then if you ...

Advantages: It's over Disadvantages: Lasts more than a minute
...The one time Spice Girl has brought out a solo album and judging by the video for the single she's well into playing the sex card good and hard (ooer missus) for all it's worth.
I always found Bunton to be the least talented of all the SG's (yes even more so than Stick Spice) and alwasy felt she was pretty much of a lightweight makeweight and now I'm damn sure of it.
'A Girl Like Me'? What do you means Emma, a girl who is vacuous, fawning, untalented, ... ...see you mean ravishing, girl next door, talented and very brainy, sorry, I missed that one.
C'mon man there's no need to be so spiteful it's only pop...
Well, actually there is every need to be spiteful. Ms Bunton is trading on her past glories and flashing he rknicks to get on and it's not good enough (just like this album).
I actually liked the Spice Girls as an outfit and thought they were intelligent and gifted, but since we see them exposed, ...

Advantages: What took you so long is a good song Disadvantages: The rest are soooooooooo boring!
This CD is the most un-original i have ever heard. All the songs sound exactly the same and have almost the same beat to them. I would have thought Emma would have made a much better album than this. But i'm warning you DON'T BUY IT! The only decnet song on it is 'what took you so long' which gets boring after a while. Hopefully Victoria Bechams album will be muchhhhhhhhhh better. Her first single with Dane Bowers was really good anyway. It seems ... ...their solo albums are doing well Forever has been in and out of the charts so quickly and some of the smae writers were probably used for Emma's album,. Advantages: Mainly optimistic songs, 70s motown feel, brilliant voice Disadvantages: All quite upbeat, but apart form that none at all!
Free Me is EmmaBunton's second solo album, her first album A GirlLikeMe was released in January 2002, and shows the somewhat matured side of the 28 year old solo singer.
Who is she?
Emma Lee Bunton was born in January 1976 and grew up in North London while attending the Dame Sylvia Young Drama School. She joined The Spice Girls in the early 1990's and they had their first of many number 1's in 1996 with WannaBe. They provided an innovative and refreshing change to the world of pub, outwardly publicising the notion of girl power along with a sexy and confidant image. Many number 1 hits followed including Say You'll Be There and Who Do You Think You Are. Although there has been no official break up they have all been following solo careers since 2001. Following her post Spice Girl Days Emma has a number of hits under her belt ...
