Album Notes: Less the thinking man's metal band than they are the flat-out egghead's metal band, veteran loud-heavy experimentalists Neurosis released GIVEN TO THE RISING, their ninth studio album in 2007 on their own label, Neurot Recordings. Pummeling drums, angry guitars, and vicious vocals form the musical foundation, but they quickly give way to odd tunings, dark foreboding drones, and high-concept aesthetic twists and turns. Produced once again by Steve Albini, Neurosis continues to demonstrate why they're one of the most respected bands in heavy music with each subsequent release. GIVEN TO THE RISING arrives as perhaps their most fully realized and perfectly executed album to date.
Album Reviews: CMJ (p.37) - \"In many ways, this is Neurosis' heaviest album, not only musically, but emotionally....Neurosis has truly transcended 'heavy metal' on this album.\"
Advantages: Different, interesting, well worth listening to Disadvantages: Probably not what you're expecting
...This is an excellent album - a number of tracks given the Guns n Rises treatment - heavy and punk tracks that you probably wouldn't associate with the Guns. A break away from Appetite and Illusions and a welcome one at that. Well worth investigating. The best tracks to my mind are "Brand New Rose" and "Down on the Farm". The only track given a previous outing is "Coma" played here again in all its glory. All fans of the Guns should have this in their collection and make sure you have a copy in the car - excellent for blazing down the motorway with the window down and the volume up......

Advantages: Shows a lot of promise Disadvantages: Couple of weaker moments
...1. A New Religion
2. Dysfunctional Reality
3. Spiral Of Violence
4. Modern Day Freakshow
5. Refracted Neurosis
6. Straitjacket Messiah
7. Fake
8. Disgrace
9. Beautiful Suicide
After the first few tracks of this stomping disc it is clear that Soul Destruction are a band with enormous potential, their blend of experimental metal, and hints of industrial thrown in for good measure, a formula that worked well for bands like Fear Factory, is almost certain to reap rewards for this lot on the strength of this record alone. There really is a bit of everything here, it is easy to draw comparisons to Sulpher (in an industrial sense), Prong (with the blend of industrial metal) and as mentioned above, Fear Factory, due to the raw, yet catchy beats assembled throughout.
Upon listening to the creativity displayed over the course of the album...

Advantages: Fantastic piece of work Disadvantages: Massively underrated
...given. A superb album that just envokes such a Britishness about it. "Sunday Morning", hangovers, papers & carwashing, the hit single "Our House" . "Primrose Hill", an old man sits in his lonely home watching children play in the park.
There is a tinge of sadness, and bitterness in the album. The songs are darker, more thoughtful. The title track "The Rise & Fall", "Tiptoes" (about a suicide jumper), "Blue Skinned Beast" (unrecognised soldier killed in action), the aforementioned "Primrose Hill". The other single "Tomorrow's Just Another Day".
There are however the lighter moments such as "New Delhi", this album is no "Berlin" by Lou Reed!!
In many ways, this album reminds me of the album which for me encapsulated everything that was great about Brit Pop. Namely, Blur's excellent "Modern Life is Rubbish". An album which seemed to fuse...
