Game Over...or is it...

Advantages: Thunder's most mature album, lyrically and musically
Disadvantages: The 4 year gap before the next one

...you won’t see it through/You’re giving the game away/Promise everything beneath the sun/Your only game is what you’re working on/How much longer can you carry on/Giving the game away”

“You’ll Still Need a Friend”

Another slower number. There do appear to be a lot more of these than on previous Thunder albums, which isn’t always a bad thing, but for a band known for their faster paced numbers, does represent a major ...
...as all the reasons she’s giving for ending it isn’t the truth, but seems true to her, and there’s nothing you can do about it. If you’ve ever been dumped, it’s the kind of song that you want to have on as it sums up the way you feel, but don’t want to have around in case it makes you break down.

Unusually for a Thunder ballad, the intro features the electric guitars, but this soon ends and the first verse is just Danny and a piano, ... more

Magnifique!

Advantages: In parts, this is Thunder at their best
Disadvantages: Misses the trademark humour

's second ballad, "Together or Apart", follows to provide a change of pace. It's quite close to the sound of the ballads from the "Giving the Game Away" or "Shooting at the Sun" albums. It's again nothing terribly special, nicely crafter, but not lyrically or musically anything new by Thunder's standards. There's a funky bluesy guitar lead to "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down" that sounds a little like a rocked up version of Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits". It's one of the more up tempo tracks on the album and again a nod towards the old style Thunder pop-rock sound. It's one that I can see being a great live favourite or getting played at rock clubs as it's got a groove to it you can bounce around to. This theme continues with "One Foot in the Grave" which, I'm pleased to say, is far more than a rock cover version of the TV theme tune ...

Review of Magnificent Seventh, The - Thunder

Thunder - Not Dead Yet!

Advantages: Some songs as good as anything Thunder have ever done
Disadvantages: Not available really cheaply, yet.

on some great ballads starting this way before and this is up there with them. It?s a great pop ballad with a slight pop-rock edge and has the thoughtful kind of lyrics that were last seen on ?Numb? from 1999?s ?Giving the Game Away? album. ?Stubborn Kinda Love? is an up tempo finish to the album and proves what has seemed the case for most of the album, that Thunder are on form this time around. It?s a mid-tempo pop-rock track with a slightly darker feel to the music, but with a decent groove to it. As with ?What a Beautiful Day?, it?s a decent track, but doesn?t quite live up to the best on the album. Whilst this isn?t quite Thunder?s best album, it certainly stands up well next to any of their other releases. Whilst a little darker musically than some of their earlier albums, it?s full of the effective ballads and the stadium rock ...

Review of Robert Johnson's Tombstone - Thunder

The Rare, The Raw, The BEST!

Advantages: A great album and great value to boot
Disadvantages: Why have "the rest" when "the rare" and "the raw" are so good?

kicks in. The chorus is one of their best, nearly on a par with "Numb" (from 1999's Giving the Game Away") and this is very close to being the best ballad Thunder have produced, and would be if "Love Walked In" wasn't such a wonderful song. This is probably as close as they've come to matching that track. "Now you've seen the worst I can do, I don't wanna keep hurting you/Can you find it in yourself to forgive me/Now you know what I am, do you think you can stand it/Cause I know that it's true/I've got history in the making with you" The album closes out with "Between the Covers", which has a filthy lyric that even Whitesnake might have been proud of. It's a mid-tempo pop-rock track, with a funky guitar riff running through it, which almost drags you out of your chair to dance. After the seeming maturity of the previous lyric ...
