From the Bolshoi Theatre 1989Ballet in Three ActsWritten in 1898, Raymonda is deemed to be ... more
Glazunov's finest ballet, stately and melodious. It here receives an illustrious treatment from the Bolshoi and one of its most celebrated stars, Natalya Bessmertnova. The Bolshoi adaptation of this piece, choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich based on the original choreography of Marius Petipa and Aleksandr Gorsky, is notable for its fantastic set and costume design, with both the hero and heroine dressed in pure white. Natalya Bessmertnova's portrayal of the title role is wonderfully delicate, and she has a devoted and equal partner in Yuri Vasyuchenko.Raymonda bids farewell to her betrothed Jean de Brienne, who presents her with a silk shawl as a farewell gift and goes to flight in the Crusades. She dreams of him, but her dreams are frequently interrupted by the appearance of a Saracen warrior, Abderakhman, who is fascinated by the beautiful noblewoman and ultimately attempts to abduct her. Jean, by this time, has now returned home and the two finally - and fatally - duel.

Advantages: Wonderful, lyrical music Disadvantages: if you're not romantic at heart!
My enthusiasm for Glazunov has been shared with you before, but this is the one I?ve been waiting for. The second concerto is wonderful. Brahms? 2nd and Chopin?s 2nd seen through the eyes of a Russian Romantic ? what more could you want! This music is utterly charming, tuneful and unpretentious ? the latter an unusual trait in a concerto ? and will improve any day or night, no matter how you feel. The 1st is the longer and well worth hearing, and there is a compilation set of variations from a number of Russian contemporaries that, if not up to the standard of the Diabelli, is none the worse for that. There are very few alternatives for this music and now there is no reason to deny yourself the pleasures that are to be found; you will not be disappointed. ...
Advantages: That sparkle that only few have brought to these works! Disadvantages: Once its ended you just wish there was more!
, with such longing and pain that it makes you melt inside. A truely incredible piece by an amazing legendary performer.
The Glazunov concerto was somewhat alien to me. I do know Glazunov's style vaguely from playing his String Quintet and Chant du Menestral but had no idea how incredible the concerto is. Its now one of my favourites with its lush harmonies and obscure melodies and rousing finale, and hearing Vengerovs penetrating yet sweet tone playing makes it all worth while!
I reccomend this to anyone who loves the Romantic Violin Concertos!!!! And anyone who just wants to hear beautiful music!!!!
Like i mentionned before, the only bad thing about this is that it ends and then theres no more!!!! :) ...
