So after selling in the region of 80 million albums on the Columbia record label Mariah decides that Mr Motola, her ex husband, and Sony Music America CEO are just too much to handle.
Enter Virgin Records, a new soundtrack album and Mariahs first movie. And might I add last movie in which she is the main character.
The movie first and foremost I made my girlfriend watch because im a Mariah fan. We've had a baby now ... ...quest to assuring her i was the man of her dreams!
The album itself i quite enjoy but i suppose in a sense im bias as ive been following Mariahs musical career for 10 years since i was a smooth faced 15 year old. It has the usual ballads mixed in, including Never Too Far, which i would say is probably the saddest song on the album once you've seen the movie. The movie first and foremost I made my girlfriend watch because im a Mariah fan. We've had a baby now but this movie didn't do me any favours on my quest to assuring her i was the man of her dreams!
It also has another very sad song called Reflections but a fantastic ballad by Mariah's usual standards. Great bridge, great strong, long notes and a great overall slushy big ballad.
There are other songs with a more jamaican kinda feel to them like Dont Stop (funkin for Jamaica). Lets not forget the first single from the album "Loverboy". This is quite a fast paced song along the lines of Heartbreaker or Honey with other rap artists adding there own little sound all around Mariahs.
My personal favourite on this album is a song called All My Life. Ive still not figured out why i like it so much but its just a nice, happy, fresh song which never got released as a single but by any means i think should have.
There are a few other songs mixed in with a rap/soul feel to them and overall the album has a very 80s music feel but still gets that fantastic 7 octave voice that we're all used to across. Nice little transition album between Columbia - Virgin and Def Jam Records.
Price wise this can now be picked up quiet cheap and for anyone who likes Mariahs music or the movie i would say this is a must have.
Advantages: An album of corkers! Disadvantages: Not enough tracks!
No one needed to sell this album to me as I am a die hard Mariah fan! However, I feel it is my duty to try and sell it to others, as this album received such bad press - mainly due to the movie it was attached to - that its greatness was never appreciated.
I will agree with anyone who tells me that the film 'Glitter' was pretty poor. I have watched it endless times (just because I'm an MC fan) and made my boyfriend suffer it once - though I promised ... ...is quite bad. I can, therefore, understand why you might think the album is along the same lines. This is where I would whole heartedly disagree with you. The album is full of classics, frankly, and I just wish Mariah had recorded more songs for it. Whether you are a fan of 80s pop, funky disco tunes or power ballads, your needs will be satisfied with this CD as they are all here. Mariah did release 2 songs from the soundtrack, Loverboy and Never ...

Advantages: Perhaps considered a guilty pleasure... Disadvantages: Voices are nasal. Lyrics/music are standard.
Masterpiece theatre is pretty bland.
This album is forgettableand their voices are far too nasal for my comfort. Also I am sure that some collaborations with people who can actually sing would brighten the whole album up just a tad.
If you haven't heard them at all before (like me up until i bought it) I wouldn't recommend getting this album. It's just so not enough from an album.
The songs are bland with no stand out tracks at all.
The whole album is so dated even at the time of release. Sort of like MariahCarey before "The Emancipation Of MimI" when she was trying too ahrd to be urban. Anyone remember "Charmbracelet" or "Glitter"?
The songs are lyrically non-descript. Pumping out what you'd expect from R&B. My guess is En Vogue are over
The album cover is really uninspiring but there's no doubt that these ladies ...

Album Notes
Personnel includes: Mariah Carey, Cameo, Ludacris, Da Brat, 22, Mystikal, Nate Dogg, Ja Rule, Fabulous, Eric Benet, DJ Clue, Busta Rhymes, Shawnna. Producers include: Clark Kent, Mariah Carey, Damizza, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis. Looking to go down the vocal-diva-becomes-movie-star path blazed by Diana Ross, Madonna, and Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey teamed with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to executive produce the soundtrack to her film debut. Keeping with her character Billie, a struggling '80s singer trying to break into the biz via the club scene, GLITTER has a handful of vintage dance covers given a modern twist. Chief among these interpretations are a vintage electro-funk reading of Cherrelle's "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" and a hip-shaking version of the underground classic "Funkin' For Jamaica" renamed "Don't Stop (Funkin' For Jamaica)" and featuring Mystikal's rough-neck rapping. Mariah also represents her love of hip-hop with a groove-heavy remake of "Last Night A D.J. Saved My Life" featuring Busta Rhymes, Fabulous, and DJ Clue. Elsewhere, Billie's real-life alter ego rips through a number of ballads with her powerful pipes, including the piano-driven "Reflections (Care Enough)," the heartfelt "Lead The Way," and the show-stopping "Never Too Far." Mariah's fruitful collaborations with Cameo (the funk-pounding "Loverboy"), Ja Rule and Nate Dogg (the loping reggae jam "If We"), and Eric Benet (the mid-tempo workout "Want You") also gild this stellar crossover project.
