Advantages: A great singer Disadvantages: You may be but off by a male singing this high

‘Heroes’ is a collection of 18th century arias written by Handel, Gluck and Mozart. These provide a perfect showcase for Scholl’s unique talent. From the first bars of a recitative taken from Handel’s ‘Serse’ I was hooked. Scholl’s version of ‘Che faro sensa Euridice’ from Gluck’s opera ‘OrfeoedEuridice’ (you will know the tune when you hear it) is simply stunning. His realisation of some of Mozart’s earliest operatic arias is a delight. All the music on this CD has a dignity, which is the result of Scholl’s effortless technical mastery and purity of tone.
This is a strange and lovely album that I guarantee will give many, many hours of pleasure. The ‘Heroes’ of the title refers not so much to...
