Advantages: Great cast, good disaster film, some good special effects Disadvantages: Not the best film ever
I love escaping into the world of films. I love many kinds of films, but two of my favourites are disaster movies (having been brought up by a Dad who loves The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno) and films starring classic actresses. I love Jean Harlow, Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood and the like. So imagine by glee when I heard of a disaster movie starring two screen legends ? Sophia Loren and Ava Gardner! The Cassandra Crossing was also nice and cheap ? just £2.98 from Amazon ? so how could I resist?!
The plot is typically dramatic, of course. A man has been exposed to the plague virus and boards a train from Stockholm to Geneva. The authorities need to prevent the plague spreading, so they seal the train full of 1000 passengers and re-route it to a bridge called the Cassandra Crossing. However, the bridge is perilously ...
Advantages: Star Studded Blockbuster Disadvantages: A touch dated
slowly infecting those aboard.
A renowned Doctor teams up with the military to try and contain the disease to the train. But as the train approaches Poland the military decide not to allow the train to reach its destination, if the train arrives there is a possibility that an infected passenger could make contact with the outside world. If the plague becomes airborne the whole of Europe could be wiped out within a few weeks. The decision is made to terminate the train, before it reaches its target, this will of course mean the eradication of all aboard.
My Thoughts
------------------
The Cassandra crossing was one of those films I remembered seeing as a child, It stuck in my mind for many years. It had not been given television air time in a quite considerable time, so I was thrilled when it came out on DVD. The acting is first rate ...
Advantages: Thriller in the same vein as Match Point Disadvantages: Terrible accents, rushed ending
Having scored a success with his previous British based movie Match Point, Woody Allen returns to serious mode in the movie Cassandra's Dream. This crime drama stars Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell as brothers pushed to the limits by their need for cash.
Having thoroughly enjoyed Match Point I delayed watching this crime thriller for a considerable time, why you ask? Because having flicked through the DVD's chapters I was greeted with two of the worst "mockney" cockney accents I have ever heard. And these terrible accents come from the movies big stars. I guess if we turned the clock back 50 years these accents would be acceptable, but in modern day cinema this all seems terribly bad. But I guess as both actors have incredibly broad accents McGregor Scottish and Farrell Irish there has to be a bit of give, for anyone with an accent ...
