Going For The One: title track and second single released, reaching No 24 in November 1977, this seems to me to be a song of two halves, with a rather plodding opening giving way at the bridge to an astonishing free-for-all in which all the band decide to go off in all different directions. Whilst this might not sound very good, it is actually very effective. Steve Howe (guitars) and Rick Wakeman (keyboards) seem to ... ...Yes come together after seperately going off in tangents.
Wonderous Stories: a top 10 hit single in the UK. Funnily enough this is the weakest track on this album. A slow piece with excrutiating lyrics "my spirit climbed into the sky, I bid it to return to hear your wonderous stories, la la la la la la", ain't music a funny thing. A nice enough backing track though.

Yes adjourned to the famous Mountain Studios in Montreaux, Switzerland (Smoke On The Water, anyone?) during 1977 to record this mangum opus.
There are, by mid 70's Yes standards, a huge total of five (yes 5) tracks on here. Don't panic, fans, there are still three epic numbers to be found though.
Self-produced by the band, released in July 1977, reaching number one in the album charts, and spawning not one but two Top 30 hits, is this Yes' most complete album to date? Let's see.....
Steve Howe (guitars) and Rick Wakeman (keyboards) seem to be having a personal duel on this track, as they come in and out of the speakers. Topped by some bizarre lyrics "the truth of sport plays rings around you" for instance. Then the stop-time gap comes in and everyone gets back in line for the last two bars. Incredible record. You won't hear this covered on The X Factor.
Turn Of The Century: A slower beginning to this happy/sad number. Lovely acoustic guitar as the mad pixie Jon Anderson (vox) tells the story of Roan, the sculptor whose wife passes away and he builds a statue of her from stone. Halfway through the band all come in, now an emotional electric guitar solo beckons the second half of this tale, the romantic look back at their time before, complete with a soaring musical backdrop. "When we meet , how we'll look, time will leave me clearly", You should be bawling your eyes out by the end of this.
Parallels: Just time to wipe away a tear before Rick Wakeman comes in with his memorable church organ solo, that underpins this incredible piece of music. Chris Squire (bass) adds a good sound rythym in this tale of, well, not sure exactly, I think two souls joining together spiritually. The chorus is the strongest part, holding the whole thing together, as once again Yes come together after seperately going off in tangents.
Awaken: All along it seems that the whole record has just been a warm-up for this, 15 minutes plus of musical astonishment. This is a mini-opera of a track, slow start, rock chorus (Awaken, Gentle, Mass, Touch....Suns High Streams Through...Strong Dreams Reign Here...) before another church organ comes in to slow things down before building up again to a crashing sixth verse. Then a quiet, reflective second half with more muscial twists and turns before another crescendo and finally fading out "wish the sun to stand still, reaching out to touch our own being",
With another brilliant sleeve by Hipgnosis, although not quite up to Roger Dean standards, Yes have come up with another winner. Musicianship in abundance, songs, ideas and craft come together here to create an amazing album.
A real poke in the eye to the punks who were massing, ready to assume the mantle of the New Wave. How shortsighted we are in this country, we had three of the best bands in the world (Zepp, Floyd and Yes) at the same time, and ridiculed them. It took another generation to fully appreciate their brilliance.
Advantages: Embodies everything great about the band Yes Disadvantages: Doesn't have a Roger Dean cover
...thing is for sure though, Going For The One, always features in any conversation when the discussion of their ultimate achievement is raised.
Although in 1977 punk was beginning to tear down the sacred castle walls built by Progressive and Symphonic Rock groups, this did not stop the creation of something truly magical. Spawning an uncharacteristic hit single with the beautiful Wonderous Stories, Going For The One shot to the top of the album charts ... ...emotive pieces of music you will ever hear, while the powerful Parallels and Going For The One act as reminders as to why Progressive Rock bands in the seventies were loud enough to blow orchestras off stage.
If you plan to own just one Yes album, make it this one. ...

Advantages: Good foot stomping tracks Disadvantages: Didn't like some of the experimental sounding tracks particuarly the last track
At the beginning of the track when the jangling guitar began to play the first song that came into my head was Teen Spirit by Nirvana. This song really didn't do anything for me was the same all the way through and sounded like a tired end of Cd song.
So summing up I thought there were 4 tracks that stood out from the rest.
Track 1 Great DJ,
Track 2 That?s not my name,
Track 5 Shut up and let me go
Track 7 Be the one
Would I recommend you go and buy this CD? Yes I would. This CD is one of those that will grow on you but, once it does it becomes enjoyable and you will wonder why it took you a while to get in to it. ...
Advantages: Ties up the loose ends Disadvantages: None
a drum solo. Not Moby Dick II, but interesting nonetheless. Rick Wakeman was recording his memorable keyboard solo to "Parallels" (from Yes's "Going For The One") in the same studios around about the same time as this.
Wearing And Tearing: the third outtake from "Out Door", Zepp have a bash at punk and fail rather miserably.
Produced by Jimmy Page, with an executive producer nod to Peter Grant, which usually meant he sat in the studio sorting the hangers-on out. The whole album reeks of understatement, which is probably exactly what was intended. Worth a listen. ...
Advantages: Original, humourous, great songs Disadvantages: Goes on a bit
This, Type O Negative's breakthrough album, bringing them to the attention of the mainstream (to an extent at least) was at that time by far the best they had written so far, bringing something of a pop sensibility to the long, dark and heavy songs they wrote for this album.
"Bloody Kisses" is really a send-up of the whole goth genre, cleverly mocking the usual cliches of death and sex and of course, Christianity. This is probably most noticeable on the song "Black No.1", which satirises the identikit goth girl cliche to devastating effect as singer Pete Steele describes how she "can't go out because your roots are showing..." Yes, it's all about hair-dye!
One thing Type O do possibly better than any other band is cover other people's songs. This is showcased here by the brilliant "Summer Breeze", where the jaunty easy ...

Album Notes
Yes: Jon Anderson (vocals); Steve Howe (guitar, vocals); Rick Wakeman (keyboards); Chris Squire (bass, vocals); Alan White (drums, vocals). Recorded at Mountain Studios, Montreux, Switzerland. All tracks have been digitally remastered. It seemed very strange to see a Yes album without Roger Dean's colourful, ipsy-dipsy land of fantasy on the cover. The replacement is a concrete jungle of grey skyscrapers, but do not fear, the music is still the same. The reassuring chorus on the title track and Howe's beautiful acoustic guitar on "Turn Of The Century" comfort the listener that some things never change. After a gap of three years, the Yes boys refused to say no and came back with one of the best albums of their lengthy career.
