Album Notes: The consistently excellent two-disc GOLD series does it again with this superbly selected and compiled Gladys Knight and the Pips collection. The 39 tracks here stretch back to the group's early-'60s material, with cuts like \"Every Beat of My Heart\" and \"Giving Up\" hinting at both the Motown and doo-wop traditions. By the 1970s, the group had settled into a more smoothly soulful sound, complete with strings and horn arrangements.

'Bestseller Mystery'

Oh yes. Here we go. This is a very old-school type song, harking back to a bluesy sixties number. Just Bev's vocals, a bit of bass, and a bit of percussion, it keeps moving up a gear every start/stop chorus. A fabulously structured song, with a beautiful lyrics about unrequited love, this is one of those hidden gems that keeps on getting better and better with every listen.
By the end of the song, she sounds orgasmic as it reaches is crescendo. A brilliant introduction to Beverley Knight for those who are interested in hearing some clever traditional singing / songwriting.

A bit more downtempo this one, this is blues club material. A slowie, Knight sings with her own brand of emotion and honesty. The dated production on it does make it sound a bit like a Gladys...

With a huge string of hits under their belts they have now released Gold, their greatest hits album.
Steps have gone from strength to strength both musically and style wise, proved to everyone that they can keep up with any new comers and still produce number one hits.
Gold boasts 20 tracks, 3 of which are new, so here is a rundown of what you will get on Gold:

An excellent remix of the old Bee Gee’s track, this modern version was huge and gave Steps their truly deserved first number 1, complete with wacky dance called the shampoo, it was a must for every Christmas party that year and remained popular long after.
