Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (p.107) - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 - \"[A] full album of hard rockin', bird-flipping tunes....[They] have tapped into an emotional well full of more bile than anyone could have expected.\"
Advantages: 80s influenced and anthemic, girls are doing what they want, great for a sing a long Disadvantages: few weak links, wouldn't have minded maintaining the escapism in regards to feelings, etc.
...**What follows is a long review. Track by track, best lyrics from each song, practically a warts-and-all observation. Written in the throes of sobriety, along with better moments of inebriation. Don't say I didn't warn you.**
This is the latest offering from Californian stone-fox group The Donnas since they parted with their label after what I felt was a fairly lacklustre album, GoldMedal. That could just be me though, maybe I have to listen to it more (or download more tracks, since I didn't think it was good enough to warrant buying). Although 'Fall Behind Me' among a coupla other tracks were cool, the video for 'I Don't Wanna Know' felt so low budget I was embarrased for the girls and it seemed that the label had their attentions elsewhere.
GoldMedal didn't have the same kinda attitude as Spend The Night or previous albums...

Advantages: Good mix of tunes Disadvantages: Not enough modern material
...Of Independence". The cover of "Could It Be Magic" seems pointless.
Donna's Stock, Aitken and Waterman period is often looked down on her by long term fans and the press viewed it as a bit of a come down as well but I enjoyed "I Don't Wanna Get Hurt" and "Loves About To Change (My Heart)". It's a shame they are missing from this CD. Donna herself didn't want "I Don't Wanna Get Hurt" to be released on single and she refused to appear in the video. This could be why only one SAW produced song appears.
The CD cover shows Donna singing into a microphone, probably at a live show.
I would recommend this - it's good for a party! I do think some of the other collections available such as "The Best Of Donna Summer" from 1990 are better though. Maybe I'm just showing my age. Older people may prefer this new album as it has less emphasis on her...

Advantages: 70s rock band attitude in modern female form, inspiring 'rock out' lyrics and music Disadvantages: one or two songs you're slightly tempted to skip, probably just for teenage girls

Cards on the table here. When I first heard the Donnas I was but a fresh faced, pink haired 16 year old - and I hated them. I couldn't put my finger on why but I just did not like them one bit.
I know, such an AWFUL reasoning (needless to say, I've grown up since then and often demand reasons for disliking something / someone), however... recently I've been feeling that all my usual female musical inspirations were a little lacklustre.
I mean... nowadays when you think 'female rock star', many (nauseatingly) think 'ooh Amy Lee' *smack...
