Classic and ESSENTIAL Diana Ross & The Supremes
Review of Love Child/Supremes A Go Go [Remastered] - Supremes (The) by  IanPhillips

Advantages: These are two of their greatest studio albums
Disadvantages: None!

...as The Supremes A Go Go (1966) raced to the top of the album charts elbowing off The Beatles, Revolver from the top spot. Though highly commercial and formulaic, The Supremes A Go Go proves compelling and indeed a classic album. Love Child became Diana Ross and the Supremes eleventh chart-topper in late 1968. This song was actually something of a comeback for Ross and the Supremes as their previous singles Somethings You Never Get Used To and Forever Came Today didn't even manage to break into the Top 20 charts. It's true that a lot of Motown acts suffered from the loss of the genius songwriting and production team Holland-Dozier-Holland. Holland-Dozier-Holland take credit for creating and defining that magical phenomenon that became commonly known as "The Motown sound - the sound of young America". Holland-Dozier-Holland had left Motown... Read review

The Beginning Of Supremes Mania
Review of Where Did Our Love Go/I Hear A Symphony - Supremes (The) by  IanPhillips

Advantages: The classic hits and some top notch album tracks
Disadvantages: The showbiz and MOR cover versions

...To zoom in on The Supremes chart-topping success in 1964, Tamla Motown records (which they had been signed to since January 1961) released an accompanying album named after their first ever No.1 hit Where Did Our Love go. The Where Did Our Love Go album hosted a collection of their chart-toppers,a few minor hits from a time when they were referred to as "The No Hit Supremes" by fellow Motown colleagues (after having released nothing but a succession of flops and minor hits between 1961-63), B-Sides and a few would-be hits. The swirling, latin-inspired, mellow arrangements on the divine A Breath Taking Guy had been penned by the genius song writing skills of Smokey Robinson (who Bob Dylan once described as "the greatest living poet"). The track featured a warm, sensual and passionate vocal performance from The Supremes stunning lead... Read review

Supremes Mania Spreads Across The World
Review of More Hits By The Supremes/The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland [Remastered] - Diana Ross & The Supremes by  IanPhillips

Advantages: Two of their very best studio albums
Disadvantages: None!

...In 1964, The Supremes had three consecutive No.1 hit titles to their credit: Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love and Come See About Me. By 1965 Supremes mania was spreading across the globe like wild fire. They were, by far, Motowns biggest selling act and were literally pumping out hit after hit. This aptly titled album captures The Supremes in their prime. The sensational combination of harmonies of Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson was just magical. The Supremes were not least aided by the excellent production skills of the sheer genius songwriting trio, Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, more commonly known as simply Holland-Dozier-Holland. Then of course there were Motowns legendary in-house band known as The Funk Brothers that were responsible for the vast majority of the groups biggest hits... Read review
